Default Sheds

Sheds, places where you can hide stuff (or yourself) from the missus. These are also more masculine versions of the summer house, especially on allotments where you can have a few beers and listen to cricket, rugby or football on the radio. The sort of place women daren't come to pester you.

The indoor version being popularized, the "man cave."

Ta for reminding me of this book I read a while back, 'Seeps.

The author asserts, quite rightly I think, that good sanitation is as important as having clean drinking water. Once all the toilet humour is put aside, this still remains an important issue for much of humanity.

Oh yeah . . . Good sanitation is good water. Once you have any population density, if your sanitation sucks, you'll have nonstop disease. There are occasionally a few things in the water which are dangerous which aren't from human sources, but the human-human loop is the devastating one (eg cholera, typhoid). Stuff that comes from animals can occasionally be nasty, but stuff that comes from us is perfectly adapted to live in us, much bigger problem.

The book you mention illustrates why the biggest gains in human life expectancy are so inexpensive. You set up proper sanitation, assure folks have clean water and life expectancy goes up by about 20 years (mostly due to a big drop in infant deaths -- diarrheal diseases kill infants in huge numbers ).

No one seems to have mentioned that the greatest boon to mankind is "your right hand". Or your left if you are that way inclined.

I agree with esteemed posters above that clean water and plumbing are a great boon to mankind. Where would we be without it? More than half of us would probably never have lived

Of course, Comrades Estreeter and Greenskull would live through everything and are indestructible

The greatest labor-saving device is probably the washing machine

The greatest discovery is electricity

Not only is this better than a tin bath, dolly and mangle, but have you noticed how the missus always checks if you've selected the correct programme? If she's going to go that far, she might as well have the machine all to herself.
