A Question of Size
No reason for asking , but hypothetically, how would one resize an oversized picture for use in, say, an avatar pic?

I use an old program called 'Micrografx picture publisher 8' from 2001, but I imagine it's basically the same process in newer porgrams.
What i do is : 1) got to the pic i want to use 2) open it with PP8 3) go to the tab with 'Image' on, choose 'Size'. 4) in the box that comes up change to 'Pixels' (most avatar rules state a pixel size allowed) and change the height scale (if working on a portrait) and reduce the pxiels to the allowed size. 5) this will make the picture go blurred. I then sharpen the image (using a small 'brush', with no Feathering and a Pressure of no more than 25. I aim mostly at the lines in the face such as nostrils, mouth, eyes etc. 6) this will usually mean over sharpening some bits by an amount. I then use a small 'Smooth'/Soften/Defocus brush with no feathering and a low 'Pressure', and then increase the View of the image (don't actually change its' size with the program, just chnage the View.) I then 'Soften' the areas that are Not edges if they've gone 'rough'. 7) I then soften the parts of the image that have gone too 'Light' (brighter than they were in the original pic) as this means those bits have been over-sharpened. 8) the aim is to have normal looking skin tones with natural hair but sharper edges. 9) save the pic as a JPG into your 'pics to upload' folder etc. Keep pracxticing until you get a result you like that is the right length and height and the right amount of Kb.

If you want a full image editing program there's a few open-source(free) programs you can try.
Gimp, bad name but a very nice program. Available for Windows, Linux and OSX. Paint.Net for Windows. Has a Linux clone called Pinta. |
