Default Advertisement Problems / Popups

Normally I try to be as self-sufficient as possible when it comes to figuring out how to resolve minor web issues, but I can not seem to find a reasonable solution for permanently eliminating the "Amateur Webcams - Creatives.livejasmin.com" popup window which loads on this site at login, without also impairing or limiting my web browsing experience.

When attempting to log in to the V.E.F. homepage after entering my username into the appropriate box, whenever I click on the inside of the password box (so that I might begin typing it), an incredibly annoying "Amateur Webcams" popup advertisement automatically opens up in a new window. This happens at nearly every single login attempt, and is becoming incredibly frustrating, as I have already taken numerous (unsuccessful) steps to eliminate the problem. Here is an image of the popup window in its current form. (Note that there are no actual pictures visible in the page, because I have managed to successfully prevent them from opening using various Firefox addons, but I still cannot keep the window itself from opening):

In addition to using the latest updated version of Firefox (v. 3.5.3), which has it's own pop-up blocker, I am also using the Adblock Plus (v. 1.1.1, https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865) Firefox addon, and have subsequently attempted to block every single unwanted image popup and "creatives.livejasmin.com" frame or script that I am able to find, by creating a ton of my own filter rules. Here is a massive list of all the Adblock Plus filter rules that I have personally created in a desperate attempt to prevent this (and other windows like it) from opening. (I will put them in a CODE box to prevent this page from becoming exceedingly long):

I have also attempted to block any instances of images from "creatives.livejasmin.com" from opening using Firefox's privacy options, and have disallowed 3rd party cookies in general, while only keeping 1st party cookies present until my browser closes (at which point they are deleted, along with any other temporary internet data).

The one Firefox addon that seemed to be effective in preventing the popup window from opening is "NoScript (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/722)," but it also ended up blocking the useful drop-down menus on V.E.F. marked with the "arrow" symbols (such as the one in the toolbar next to "Quick Links" which provides speedy access to one's subscribed threads), and also made easy, fast browsing a big headache as it prevented a lot of regular (acceptable) Javascript functions from opening on other sites. I would really prefer it if there were some other means of eliminating these annoying popups without handicapping my browser.

Another very similar script/popup issue has also become a frequent annoyance on the Imagevenue website. During a new browsing session, on the first occasion that I click on an Imagevenue thumbnail and am redirected to their page holding the full-size picture, I am almost always presented with a (seemingly misspelled) "Straemmate.com" popup/script, which I imagine is associated with the very annoying "Streammate.com" pop-up advertisements. Below is an image of the popup that occurs whenever I first open a link to Imagevenue:

I have taken all the same sort of steps to prevent this popup as I have with the "Livejasmin" ad, but to no avail. I am sorry for the lengthiness of this post, but I am truly at my wits end, and would be very grateful if anyone on the V.E.F. might have a solution to block these types of popups, without also hindering the normal performance of my internet browsing (which I imagine would result if all Javascript or Flash functions were automatically blocked by an addon or extension).

prof_derzshowitz,

I don't have the time at the moment to discuss each point but it seems you've done things pretty much correctly. One question I have is which OS are you using?

Otherwise, to try and keep things simple, I'd recommend uninstalling completely Firefox (get rid of all personal settings) and then reinstall. See what that does.

I use all of the same things that you mention and haven't had a problem. I haven't tried to get rid of that ad prior to login as I'm sure its a method for the guys here to make a few pennies per view. And once I login its gone.

I think I can help you with this though:

I think Imagevenue just started this popup within the last few days and it is very annoying. I've allowed IV to run their Javascript for years without issue but when they started that I now disallow the script and haven't regretted it. The pictures no longer resize when the DL is complete but I'll live with that rather then have to deal with their popup every time I click on one of their links.

Hope that helps a little bit.

Default Open in a new tab.

I too found this annoying - at least it only does it once per login - a way round this I found was to allow the popups to open in a new tab rather than a new window then all I have to do is close the tab - rather than the annoying window that takes over the whole screen.

This works using IE7 I would presume it would do the same in firefox.

Hope this helps and I realise that you are using firefox.

Thanks for responding. To answer your OS question, I'm running Windows XP Professional (Service Pack 3), and have downloaded and installed all of the necessary Microsoft Updates as well.

I might try to uninstall Firefox along with all of the addons and personal settings as you have suggested, but I really don't want to have to reinput all of those AdBlock Plus filters that I created, one by one, so I'm not sure that I will follow that path just yet.

Your script idea with Imagevenue sounds useful, but I would still like to be able to see the fullsize pictures, and not just thumbnails. I wonder if there is a way to block that one particular "Straemmate" script without disabling normal viewing of the site itself.

Unfortunately, I can't seem to find any place where you can specify how you'd like your popups to open in your browser (i.e. in a tab versus in a new window) within the Firefox options menu. There only seems to be a check-mark box in the "Content" section where you can chose to block or allow popups. And interestingly enough, when I do run into any other popups, they tend to open within the current page that I am viewing, while it is only "Creatives.Livejasmin.com" advertisements that open in completely new windows.

Have you tried not clicking?
One doesn't need the mouse to login. When the VEF page has loaded one can move around with the TAB-key. After entering your login name, press TAB and the cursor will move to the password field.
When done press TAB again and the 'remember me' checkbox will be marked.
Press 'space bar' to mark.
Press TAB to mark the 'login' button'
Press 'Return' to login.

No idea if this helps, don't have the problems you do. I am using Firefox+Noscript.
I am willing to suffer some less 'browser experience' rather then having those annoying pops.

You probably already know that there is a White List in the Noscript options.

Hope things resolve,

OK, that answers the question that this might be some type of Vista quirk. Our machines are pretty much the same so this must be some setting somewhere in Firefox or the add-ons.

You can probably save the filters to a WordPad document and then re-input them one at a time (if needed) after a re-install. My guess is that something in there is causing the problem. To save time and effort I'd do the complete re-install as that's the only way I know to get things back to normal.

Your script idea with Imagevenue sounds useful, but I would still like to be able to see the fullsize pictures, and not just thumbnails.
Please let me re-explain, you'll still be able to see the full size images. In the past, IV only used Javascript to resize a full size image on your screen IF the image was too large for your screen. You'd click on a thumbnail and immediately be sent to the IV website where the image would be downloaded. IF the image would fit entirely on your screen you would see no re-size but, if the image was too large for your resolution, once the image finished downloading, the IV script would make the image smaller to fit on your screen. If you wanted to see the full image you'd just left click once on the image to see it full size. Does that make sense? So as long as the IV script only did that it was useful to allow the script.

Now (within the last few days), IV has added code to its script that brings up that new pop-up; which is really annoying. I saw that a few times and then changed the NoScript setting to deny the IV script. The only difference I've noticed since is that when I download a large picture from IV it doesn't resize smaller when the download is complete. A bit of a pain but I also no longer see the pop-up.

I wonder if there is a way to block that one particular "Straemmate" script without disabling normal viewing of the site itself.
I'll try allowing IV scripts again briefly to see if that "straemmate" script is trying to run. Otherwise I haven't seen it.

Good luck and I reiterate. Sometimes its just best to start from scratch.

prof_derzshowitz,

OK, I've just gone to about 10 IV images and haven't found either the "straemmate" or "live jasmine...." scripts being run on IV. 10 isn't really a representative sample but it should have shown up on at least one of them (I would think).

So this leads me to believe that you may have a more serious problem that could require a full re-format (if you want to do things correctly). First off, are you using Spybot Search and Destroy's Teatimer?

I'm guessing that your Host file has been infected and thats why your seeing the crap from those two sites. I would try editing the file to see if they're in there (delete them if they are) but it may be a better idea (for the long run) to start thinking about a reformat.

prof_derzshowitz,

for imagevenue you should use NoScript addon to disallow scripts being run on that site, that will stop the ads: http://noscript.net/

For the ad on VEF that should not be to bad imo, when you signed in you are rid of it and it pays our server bills.

Btw i looked at your Adblock Plus filter list and although i do not use it myself; i'm on Opera (not Oprah ) its a bit overkill how you list things there. One time:

livejasmin.com

should block all banners etc from that site, think however loading from the pop-up as happens here on VEF is seperate process not related to blocking livejasmin. Page with info on how to make the filters: http://adblockplus.org/en/filters

Found the "Tab" option of "the real McCoy" a good one, I once had a computer where the mouse tended to freeze up and only way to navigate was keyboard when that happened, Tab was usefull then to get arround

Technically that is a pop-under which is why its not blocked-these things weren't designed to cope with pop-unders-they are a pain in the neck.
