63 million years ago an asteroid hit the Earth near the Yucatan Peninsula. It blew into the upper atmosphere a trillion tons of ash and earth. This debris blocked out the sun for centuries and killed all the dinosaurs. The only creatures that survived were these little rat like animals that lived in deep burrows. Scientists speculate that these creatures over millions of more years eventually evolved into higher mammals which lead to the development of the primates and humans. This means that if the asteroid never hit the Earth, humans would probably never have evolved. Instead the dinosaurs would have continue to evolve and we now might have intelligent lizards on our planet.

Those big reptiles Alligators and Crocodiles have an unusual way of keeping their newly hatched babies safe until they can be put into the water. Crocodiles and Alligators live in watery areas, such as small lakes, or swamps. When a mother Alligator or Crocodile needs to lay her eggs she finds a hidden area away from the water's edge and digs out with her hind feet a depression in the dirt or sand to put the eggs into. Then she covers this depression with sand and dirt so other predators can't find them. Momma Alligator or Crocodile instinctively knows when it is time for the eggs to hatch. When they do she actually picks up each hatchling and puts them into her mouth, and then carries them down to the water's edge and they swim away. The mother will never see them again.
The babies are large enough to eat small insects , fish and small crustaceans.

Turtles lay Their eggs on the same beaches at the same time as the Alligators/Crocodiles,The mother reptiles mistake the baby turtles for Their own offspring and carry Them down to the water as well.

An interesting thing about Crocodiles. They take their prey and roll it around for a while and leave it to tenderise before they come back to eat it. You can also incapacitate a crocodile or an alligator with an elastic band(should you get close to one) apparently it won't be able to open it's jaw.

The scene from Bond film Live and Let Die where Bond(Roger Moore) escapes crocodiles(or was it alligators?) was actually done by the owner of the farm. They were tied down and the stuntman hopped over them on tip toes very quickly narrowly being eaten by one that had wriggled free.

If any sci fi fans are interested in following up this idea, try reading 'West of Eden,' by Harry Harrison, written in 1984. I quite enjoyed the premis of it.
