Want to buy Movie Editing Software.
I just got a new Dell 660s with I5 processor. Don't know alot of the tech stuff but told the salesman at Dell I would be doing video editing at a hobbyist level.
I went out and paid $ 149 for that Adobe Photoshop Elements 11 & Adobe Premiere Elements 11 and disappointed it's not letting me save my AVI's at the 640 x 480 setting and mostly getting no audio, only repeated blips of audio followed by silence. Any other suggestions as far as ease of use for novice without having to figure out addding extra codecs type of software ? I understand I'm leaving out a lot of info on my PC - just interested in hearing you guys experience with other programs. I know there's no guarantees any one system will work. Looking at Pinnacle, Corel, or Sony Vegas. Any input is appreciated. Last edited by Retro_XXX_Buff; March 16th, 2013 at 07:26 AM.. |

Virtualdub is a free video editing program. It is extensible via plugins and filters and has an active support community. I use it as my default video editor.

TCO95,
Thanks for freeware suggestion, I'll try it for basic clipping. I had bought that Adobe because it had a lot of effects / editing options vs. the Windows Movie Maker I had been using. I was reading about things like a green screen feature and possible removing of subtitle type features in Adobe and this drew me to a pay software vs the freeware. Right now I just figured out how to download the old reliable Windows Movie Maker 6.0 - just enough to help me clip my new VHS transfers then store them on my hard drive until I get good with a decent pay editing software. Ultimately this will be to help enhance the quality of my Keisha vid clips /compilation I'm working on completing. As you know some of these old VHS need a lot of help with improving the quality / brightening up, etc. |

Retro_XXX_Buff,
You might want to take a look at AVS Software Suite http://www.avs4you.com/ I have been using this for years with great results. It does cause money but it is only $39.00 for one year or $59.00 for unlimited updates. They do offer a free trial version everything works but it puts watermarks in the videos but it would give you a chance to see how it works and if you like the features. With the software suite it includes video, audio, image, editors and some misc programs for creating discs and cleaning the registry. I bought the whole suite but do not use the reg cleaner or the disc creator (I have other programs that I like better) The video converter allows you to convert any source video into any format you would like this includes dvd, bluray, apple, android etc... You can use the video capture capabilities included in the programs to rip vhs tapes (with a rca to usb interface device) You can insert captions or remove them also. Hope this helps a little.

I used to use adobe premier years ago and found it a bit a pain in some ways. particularly it didn't play nice with web found clips.
switched to sony vegas movie studio HD platinum a few years ago and found it much easier and does everything i want. and imo it stands up to adobes full price Premier pretty well for a fraction of the price. (at hobbyist level - and low pro level, i edit video for clients with it too) any kind of video editing might lead to needing to learn a few bits - especially if you're editing found stuff. well worth downloading the demo though! -- virtuadub is excellent as far as it goes. if the clip is the right format for Vdub, and i only want to crop it down or do something really simple, i sometimes use it instead of vegas because it's quicker. and sometimes i might use it for compressing or resizing a clip i've made in vegas. Anybody have any suggestions for Mac movie editing? I've been using MPEG Streamclip freeware and it's not bad but a bit cumbersome. I think I'm ready to spend some (not a lot of) money for something faster and cleaner.

Try this: http://tmpgenc.pegasys-inc.com/en/product/tvmw5.html, I find it a very decent bit of kit.

I thought I read somewhere that you could edit the audio quite a bit as well.
I don't know if it's a possibility, but it would be awesome to split the audio in a way that you could take out the music altogether / or lower the volume then enhance the verbal dialogue between the actors. That way it would be easier to understand what they're saying to each other. TCO95, good info on the VDub - I'll have to DL and play with it. |
