scoundrel,

Here's what I use:

http://www.amazon.com/CRC-05101-QD-E.../dp/B000CCMLD0

It works pretty well on electronic contacts and isn't expensive. It even does a pretty good job of cleaning tobacco smoke residue from components. Although alcohol seems to do just as good of a job for that.

I will have to agree with others about WD-40. Don't use it on electronic components as it leaves an oily residue which can create electron pathways between places where they aren't supposed to be. This stuff is made for electronics.

I don't know if you can find CRC in England but just about any contact cleaner should do.
I use it when I service my guitars and amps. Works well.

Watch out if you do this. Last time I used a vacuum cleaner it sucked up half the keys. I had to cut into the vacuum bag and go through all the dirt to rescue them and put the keyboard back together!

No, not that one. This one.

Just stumbled across my own post and it reminded me of something that happened some years ago. A friend was having trouble with a VCR and I suggested cleaning the heads. I described how to do it: carefully, with a cotton-wool bud and some IPA or similar. Whereupon, despite my protests, he pulled off the top of his machine, got a dirty smelly old tea-towel, dipped it in the lager he was drinking and rubbed it briskly but firmly over the heads. I didn't lend him any tapes after that.

For the dust, grime and biscuit crumbs that get lodged between the keys I use the tiny brush from an electric shaver set. It's very good. For cleaning the screen and keeping the keys clean I use an anti-static microfibre cloth. For stubborn stains I use compuclean wipes which are available from most pound shops.
