I chose mine because it was my late father's favourite swear word, or part of it. 'Damn, blast and buggeration.'

Doyle? As in "Sir Arthur Conan" - a favourite writer of mine.

My younger son is what the marketeers call an early adopter. When chatrooms and the like were invented, he was the first one in. He chose Agamemnon as his nickname. Funny that, I never asked him why, because he knows as much about Greek Mythology as I do about particle physics i.e. not a great deal. Anyway, when I eventually discovered boards and was searching round for a nickname, I was going to call myself Billy Sugger, for much the same reason as Manny Fagnett chose his name. But I thought it invited too many comments that I wouldn't want to have to defend, so I thought to myself, "I wonder who in Greek Mythology was the father of Agamemnon?" Good ole Wikipedia. It's Atreus. Reading on, I found that his family suffered every possible disaster that could ever befall any family anywhere ever. Perfect!
On a related subject, I would be just as keen to know why and how people chose their avatars too (those who have them that is). Mine is the mask of Agamemnon - obvious really. Some avatars on this forum are stunning and I recommend Carol H to all who have not yet caught up. Others are really scary!

By popular demand (well, Atreus asked) here's why I chose my nickname.
It's based on my e-mail address and I took it from the very old, and very long, Marillion song of the same name. Just liked the sound of it really. Now people think I've taken it from the 'Beowulf' movie, which was based on the same story as the song. The '22' bit's on there because someone else had already taken 'grendel' as an e-mail address, so I had to add something to make it unique, and '22' seemed as good as anything at the time. Actually, I couldn't even just use '22' for the address, as someone else had already nabbed that, so I had to add some punctuation. I could've tried a different number, but I was feeling a bit bloody-minded at the time so I persevered with '22'. Anyway, I decided to use it as a forum nickname as I wouldn't have trouble remembering what it was. Told you it was boring, Atreus! |

Mine is quite simply an exclamation that might (but probably never would!!!) be declared when one breaks wind, especially in the presence of the clergy!!!
Childish I know, but it makes me giggle. (Thanks to Roger's Profanisaurus) |
