The Wong Kei Chinese restaurant, London.
All the following dishes are done extremely well and remarkably cheaply by the Wong Kei Restaurant in Gerrards Street, London: just off Shaftesbury Avenue and almost directly opposite the two dragons of Chinatown.
Shredded chicken Fried rice: sort of a Chinese risotto, tasty and filling. Beef Fried Noodles: crispy noodles, green peppers and onion fried with the beef. Lovely. Stewed Pork Fried Noodles: similar to the beef, but comes with been shoots as well, delicious. Singapore Fried Rice: same as everywhere but they do a good one. Scrambled Egg Beef Rice: exactly as it sounds. It shouldn't work. It really really shouldn't work. It works. Beef and Tomato Rice: see Scrambled Egg Beef Rice. This is only a sample of whats on offer. I recommend all of these and much much more. They all benefit from a small addition of chilli oil on the side, but you need to know that Wong Kei's chilli oil is a by product of the Manhatten Project. Here is a review of Wong Kei for non-London and overseas members who are not among the cogniscenti. http://www.london-eating.co.uk/2971.htm Be warned, the food is really nice, very reasonably priced (two courses and jasmine tea for under £6 per person is hard to beat in London) but it is actually a superior fast food joint with lots of choice, good quality but service comes with a snarl. If you are alone they will expect you to share a table with anyone who happens to be using it. This conversation really happened: I was there. In your mental image of the waiter, conjure up a picture of the really hard psycho Chinese nutter-villain in Jackie Chan's Rush Hour and you're pretty close. US tourist:[audibly shocked and irritated] Could I please have my own table? Waiter:[cold stare, almost flips, right on the edge of his temper] If you want your own table, you bring it with you!

Well, they did have a big open fronted window and they did serve takeaway from it but they had a refurb in February. There is still a takeaway kitchen fight in front but takeaway customers have to step inside now: its not a tragedy. They weren't the only one in Chinatown who did that.

It is the one then, Guys I can vouch for everything scoundrel said, it is one of the cheapest restaurants in London and the food is superb.
Another of my favourites in London is Belgo's in Covent garden it does Belgian cuisine and superb Belgian beers www.belgo-restaurants.co.uk

Has anyone here tried Barry Norman's pickled onions? Superb! You can get them in tesco. For those that don't know, Barry is a British film critic.

Free Image Hosting by ImageBam.com[/QUOTE]I've learned to be mistrustful of a small restaurant with a large menu. There's a French restaurant near Alexandra Palace where I eat very occasionally when I happen to have money to burn (they're well expensive). On any given day they have four standard offerings, a couple of specials which will depend on what was good in Smithfield Market that morning and a token vegetarian choice to show willing (until quite recently ''vegetarian'' was an alien concept in France). They keep the choice narrow to make it easier for one chef and one gofer to do the prep and stay on top of the quality using fresh ingredients. Of course, if it all came out of the freezer in cellophane packets, they could offer a much wider choice.
