This quote was attributed to John Paul Jones for a long time (I first ran across it in Starship Troopers by Robert Heinlein. According to Wikiquote,though, it is now believed to have been written by Augustus C. Buell. I had wondered that Jones would have said something like this, when he was, by all accounts, an intemperate man himself
