Now there is a modded version, VirtualdubMpeg2, which supports wmv/asf, but this is not the official Virtualdub version. However, this is all a moot point, as Virtualdub or Tmpgenc etc. are not WMV/asf editors. They are avi (Virtualdub) or mpeg(Tmpgenc) editors/encoders. Even when they accept asf/wmv as source material, their output is never asf/wmv. Asfbin and Asftools are real wmv/asf editors. They edit the files without re-encoding.

Yea i forgot that bit. Any reason why you want to keep wmv ? They are not the most versatile file and avi can put out just as good if not better quality using divx codecs and are usable with far more players, same with mpeg nowadays. As mentioned, windows moviemaker does the job aswell and you could convert the wmvs later if need be. Good luck anyway

Because as a rule, re-encoding always means a loss of overall quality, as people use a lossy codec, like Divx, Xvid, WMV etc. Re-encoding can be an improvement on a video that is clearly faulty, like too dark, green, red, yellow, noisy etc. Or it can offer file size advantages (DVD-Divx). Something that can be fixed using a filter. But when the original video looks fine, I would advise not to re-encode, but to use an appropriate player. Few people can improve a video that already looks fine. I use three different default media players, because my favourite player does not play everything. Yes, I know this sounds like a paradox.

Thank you for all the suggestions.
I have been a bit under the weather the past few days and just got back to this thread today. I will try the asf tool & check back. (I never figured out how to actually edit clips w MM - I hated that thing and will attempt w asftool.) Thanks |

Good, free, ASF/WMV to AVI/MPG Converter?
Hi all
Can anyone recommend a good, free ASF/WMV to AVI/MPG file converter? Only decent ones i've found are trial versions, with watermarks or length restrictions. Cheers

This one also works well, No size or time limits.
http://www.any-video-converter.com/ Heavy on the CPU, it can take a long time for a big movie. Takes some playing with the settings as eg. a WMV conversion defaults to 320 x 240, though this can be altered. |

Super is excellent (but finding the download link on the page is a bit of a puzzle!)
Google erightsoft.com and click on "Super" |

I've been using Super for a few years, and it really is the business. It has handled every type of file I've thrown at it, though sometimes I've had to play with the settings to get it to convert to some formats. Thoroughly recommended.

mediacoder ...... open source and free and will convert pretty much anything into anything
gazzilions of options and many presets for all types of media players like iphone/psp/zune ect and is optimized for multicore processors and graphics cards, so its fast, as long as you have the system to benefit from the program of course. its also updated farly regulary only cons are its not the most user friendly program as you need to understand the basics of video and audio codec settings, at the minimum but there is a basic mode and the presets are handy too you will need to have firefox installed as well |
