This is their website - https://www.sccgov.org/sites/oir/Doc...svcs-guide.pdf Some private organizations want to open more of them, but face resistance from the neighborhoods that they want to expand in. I can't blame them.

There are various organizations feeding the hungry - Loaves & Fishes, Martha's Kitchen, Second Harvest Food Bank, etc. The more they feed, the more come to this area. https://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/loca...431889503.html

Ever since the state closed Agnew State Hospital (back in the 80's), the mentally ill have been let loose to wander the valley. Also many newly homeless drive here in their vehicles and live in them, moving from large parking lot to parking lot. As said by others, the nice weather in this area attracts homeless.

The people who sleep in their cars, only a few vehicles on an irregular basis, don't bother me that much. The people who make me rant I believe are mentally ill, are rarely there during the day and come by at night. In really cold weather they must ditch their drugs and alcohol and stay at shelters. They are not young, do not appear underemployed, the few times I have seen them, they walk away quickly.

Sorry about the rant, but had to let out some of the frustration.

I guess its ok to let out your frustration, but really, it's the government that is at least part of the problem because they are not stepping up to fulfill a vital societal function. And we know just who is pulling the purse strings for the government and getting themselves even more tax cuts right now, don't we?

You need to think about the fact that the people you "elected" into power do not care one bit that you have to step in homeless people's poop and clean up their empty wines bottles and needles. Raging against some mentally ill homeless person who is barely conscious by normal standards accomplishes nothing. Look up, not down.

I long for the days before November 2016 when there were no homeless.

I have noticed that there are some "homeless" panhandlers in Cincinnati that are either exaggerating their problems, or are outright bullshitters.

Case in point, there was a guy who looked "homeless" and panhandled all day, until the authorities figured him out and arrested him for panhandling without a license and/or deceiving people into thinking he was homeless. He actually changed into business clothing and drove a nice car home to the suburbs after each of his panhandling workdays, and was making $60K a year off people.

This is a lot like one egregious scandal a few years back, when certain dishonest people (working at our county Department of Jobs and Family Services) were giving their friends and families fake food stamp cards and fake Medicaid cards, eventually being arrested for welfare fraud when they had given out about $1.5 million in fraudulent benefits. They got about 10 years in prison and had to repay every last dollar of the benefits they bilked.

Are there people out there who are on hard times, and could use all the public and private help they are eligible for? Certainly. But not all of them are what they seem...

I don't hate the homeless, but i have to admit that
1. i don't envy them (obviously) and
2. i wouldn't want them around me (but that said, i don't like most people, if they have a home or not) i kinda understand rogerb's sentiment on them.

I feel that governments have a big responsability in this (after all it is their job to ensure the safety of the citizens of the country), i'm sure that not that much of tax payer's money can be well spent to help out homeless people. So wat if we have one jet fighter less to cover that expense.

Edit: as for panhandlers, fuck those!

I had no idea that over 250,000 are homeless in the UK. A comparable percentage in the United States would be over 4 million, nearly 8 times the current numbers. This must be very distressing in a geographically smaller and more socially cohesive nation like England.

Others may have noticed how many participating in this discussion live in the San Francisco Bay Area. California has 12% of our nations homeless and they are much more visible in that 62% of our homeless are unsheltered. We have experienced a nearly 40% growth in the numbers of homeless in Alameda County during the past 2 years. More than 80% of the newly homeless are long term residents of the area who have been displaced by the area's rapidly rising rents.

I voted against Hillary. California was going for her, no way Trump would win California. And pretty much I rant against Trump. Dems have been running California with the exception of Arnold, not that he did anything great in his time in office.

Homeless have been around ever since I can remember. Like said by others, it is getting worse. I think it is the Feeding Cats phenomenon - feed them and they will come. I mean where are all these underage kids coming from (300% increase)? The community is suppose to provide permanent housing and food for these unaccompanied minors?

The UK having a homeless problem 8 times the size of the US is new to me. Is your economy that bad or does the social plan of providing for them generate more of them?

Note: The few homeless that plague me are not the type who stay in shelters based on the alcohol bottles and needles we clean up.

In terms of permanent housing - the Housing Authority of the County of Santa Clara provides support for 17,000 households. https://www.scchousingauthority.org/

The only thing I hear about Section 8 housing is that no one wants them near them.

Those crowds of migrants in France trying to get across the Channel, is it because France's social services are so much less than the UK's? Is getting in the UK like winning the homeless lotto? Many seem intent on Germany too, I am guessing if you service them, they will come.

Wish we could export some of ours.

Probably some came from Denver. Not only is it colder there, but I guess City officials use flamethrowers to burn down their camps. http://thefreethoughtproject.com/cit...eless-streets/

Tried to check those stats on homeless populations, seem to find .5% for both the US and UK. Near 1 in 200 in both countries.
