This is a great one victor. Nicely done. ------------------------ King of California (2007) "An unstable dad who after getting out of a mental institution tries to convince his daughter that there's Spanish gold buried somewhere under suburbia." Starring Michael Douglas Evan Rachel Wood credit IMDB ------------------------------ A light, charming quirky comedy/drama. The story is appropriately propelled by an excellent soundtrack.

Oblivion (2013)
A bit tedious, there was one highlight where you get to watch Tom Cruise beat the snot out of Tom Cruise but unfortunately Tom Cruise wins.

Anne of Green Gables (1985)
Don't laugh...OK, laugh.
This movie is staffed by some extremely pretty girls who are younger than 18, so I post no images. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088727/ I lost a bet a while back and my forfeit was to read the book by L.M Montgomery. It's a very good book and I don't care who knows I think so. I like this television film as well. Megan Follows did a splendid job as the growing heroine Anne Shirley, taking her from the age of 13 to 17, when she's passed teacher training and is about to start her first teaching post. The maturing process is deftly handled through costume, makeup and, above all, Ms Follows' excellent acting skills. Schuyler Grant, who plays the important part of Diana Barry, Anne Shirley's best friend, also performed really well. She's from an acting family (Katherine Hepburn was her great-aunt) and her acting I thought was really impressive from such a young performer. The location filming shows very good production values for a TV movie. The story itself is a strong one, in which the whimsical dreams of childhood are counterpointed by the dark realities of life. Anne Shirley is interesting and a likeable heroine partly because she is a survivor, an orphan who has oscillated between orphanages and "foster parents" who have exploited her pitilessly as an unpaid skivvy and nursemaid; yet she remains passionately in love with life. Her character and personality are really admirable, but with enough flaws and weaknesses to make her credible and engaging. Her friendships are her greatest wealth and she has the wisdom to know it, and the humour to laugh at herself. Diana most of all is her friend: Anne is hugely imaginative and a born storyteller and entertainer, whereas Diana is the sensible one, keeping Anne's feet on the ground; clueing her in on which of the boys are currently checking her out; but also providing the enthralled audience for the never ending stream of stories Anne dreams up. They aren't mere dreamers though; Diana is observant and shrewd, and has a pleasing edge to her character, just a little bit cruel when it is deserved. Quote:
But underneath the photogenic locations, the physical comfort on a level Anne never knew until she was adopted by the old brother and sister who reside at Green Gables, they live a tough life which can go sour very quickly if anyone gets sick. There's a pivotal scene where Anne is reconciled with Diana Barry's family who rejected her and forbade Diana to be her friend because Anne accidentally got Diana very drunk on home-made wine, thinking it was blackberry cordial. The reconciliation happens as a result of a grave crisis, when most of the adults (including Mr and Mrs Barry) are out of town at an election rally, and Diana's little brother is desperately trying to breathe, with croup: a life threatening illness. The Barry's have a maid (they're a bit well to do compared with Anne's adopted family) but the maid has no more idea what to do than Diana; so Diana does the only thing she can do, runs through the snow to her neighbours, Anne's family, overrides the feud Mrs Barry declared on Anne's family, and begs for help. Anne has not been a drudge and nursemaid to large families of small children for nothing, and she knows how to treat croup. In those pre-streptomycin days, the standard method was to apply a harsh expectorant (in this case Ipacacuana) and hope for the best, that the sufferer will cough out enough phlegm that he/she will gain easier breathing. It's not recommended today, but it was a damn sight better than doing nothing. Anne stick to it for hours, applying periodic doses and holding the child in the recovery position until he makes the crucial cough and breaks the dam stopping him from breathing. The doctor, when he finally makes it from a town miles away, is quite clear that the boy owes his life to Anne's intervention, and of course Mrs Barry surrenders unconditionally on all fronts. The little plot twist makes some big points. This is an isolated community and medical help is far away; you can die more easily here. Also, there's no state to help you, except that there's a school part funded by the government. Neighbours must not feud, and must get along, even if they dislike each other, because they only have each other to depend on. For all that this is a childrens growing up story, it has dark currents in it and is a story for adults too. This is a good film of a good book.
