Are you "stuck in an era"
I used to make fun of the 70's hippies in the 80's who were stuck on Zeppelin, rode around VW buses etc. I couldn't understand why they wouldn't get with the times
Well now I'm almost 40, and find almost all my interests are from the late 70's and 80's. I like the 80's hair bands, and with extreme exceptions, don't care for new bands. You can have Matchbox 20, give me Ozzy, or Alice Cooper. Movies, TV shows, and obviously even Porn. This past week, I've sat my kid in front of E.T. and Howard the Duck, we've watched The Waltons ,The X-Files, and Happy days.I think the only new things I like are on the History Channel. Porn- well, I'm here, aren't I? I mean X is just X right? You guys all know how much better the classics are, so no need to preach to the choir Are you stuck in a specific era? Why? 20 Years ago I would have said people were clinging to their youth, but now I'm not so sure.....I mean I'm not exactly an old guy.I just like what I like! Your thoughts? |

I don't know that I'm "stuck", I just know what I like. I graduated high school in '83, so I guess the early to mid '80's is "my era". Musically I hated the '80s. I love rock and roll and soul music from the '50's thru the '70's. I think the late '60's thru mid '70's was the best era for movies. I love porn from the '70's thru the early '90's. If I am stuck, it's in a few different eras, none of them mine. But then I guess we all are, in a way, otherwise we wouldn't belong to this forum.

I'm stuck in the '40s, even though I wasn't alive then.

As long as I never turn into the stereotypical pipe smoking, slipper wearing, dressing gown clad codger of later years I don't think having a fondness for a certain era is necassarily bad. However, "during the war" etc....

never mind the bollocks
I dont know if I'm stuck, but certain certain things appeal to me.
Musically I have a wide range from early music through to classical, big bands, rock, punk, new romaticism and 90's bands like blur, stone roses etc. These days I'm into what could be termed garage bands. But I can't come at modern R & B. Its rubbish, sort of my fathers opinion of rock when I was young. I think I like the 80's best because going out was about seeing bands at clubs, I've seen many bands at clubs before they made it big, and it was fun seeing what was out there. It wasn't mass produced and had character. I saw The Prodigy's 'Breathe' on tv the other night and thought 'hey, now this rocks'. Porn is sort of the same. Most of todays porn bears all the hallmarks of mass produced cheapness - you know anyone with a cam. Cars are the same too, its rare to find a modern car with any character of its own - 50- 60's cars oozes character, you know fins and what not, seriously would a shelby cobra be made today? To sum up I guess for many decades we have been moving towards that capitalist goal of cheap mass production and those values have infected not just manufactured goods but also the mediums we use. Most of todays stuff lacks style and character simply because it costs more to produce. Uniqueness by definition cant be mass produced. So I guess thats why I prefer bygone days. Errr, was this on topic?

During the mid to late 70's when I was a teenager I didn't like the contemporary scene which was predominately disco. And then you had punk...which I admired from a distance. Anyway I preferred the music of the 60's to the likes of the Saturday Night Fever.
As time progressed and the 80's rolled around I thought to myself that these times are worse than the 70's. In my opinion the 70's lasted until about 1982 Come 1984, music shows had changed and clothing had changed. I made sure that I was still a jeans and t-shirt guy. Anyway if the guys at the dockyard where I was working at the time caught you dressed up as a Simon LeBon or a George Michael you could be rest assured that your life would be made a misery forever or at least while you were still working there. Best think about this period was the movies. Porkies, Revenge of the Nerds, Caddyshack, Fast Times at Ridgemont High etc, Anyway during this time I was still into the 60's music but was slowly getting into the 70's stuff. And as each decade progressed my tastes advanced somewhat and has ceased at the mid 80's and will progress no further. |

Stuck in a certain era? Not really, more a random harvesting of all that was good in the years between the early 70s and late Eighties. I have an 1970s van, a late 70s station wagon, and find that the songs I regarded as the cheesiest back in t'day are quite worth, from bands like Toto and so on. Obviously my classic music was popular in its day, like Zep, The Jam and so on.
So it's not really a nostalgia trip. You won't find me dressing up like a 50s rocker, but you will find odd music on my iPods, and I double-declutch as a matter of course now. But I don't really want to go back in time, as it wouldn't match up with my expectations. I love modern conveniences, like grabbing new porn as and when I want, more than 1 TV channel, and modern medicine. No leeches for me, please! |
