Charlotte Kemp may have had her eye on Olympic gold when swimming for the Junior Olympic Team as a youth, but through her later work with Playboy, Miss December 1982 has been able to deliver philanthropic gold to those with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses.
A native of Omaha, Nebraska, sport has long been a dynamic force in Charlotte’s life. After breaking both of her knees in a high-jumping accident at the age of 15, she moved from the pool to the tennis court, where she played competitively in high school and college.
During her college years at Indiana State University—where Charlotte double-majored in biology and psychology—Playboy discovered the sporty co-ed. With modeling experience already under her belt, she became a Playmate with the December 1982 issue. The following year, in October, she graced Playboy’s cover. Soon after, she served as a national spokesmodel for the NBA and Anheuser Busch as the original Miss Budweiser.
In late 1984, Charlotte moved to Monte Carlo with a Formula One racing driver. While there, she appeared in several Italian and Japanese films. She continued to model and appeared in Cosmopolitan and Vogue.
Acting, modeling, and jet-setting never deterred her from enjoying the sporting life. She participated in the famous 1983 Playmate Playoffs, a three-day competition hosted by Love Connection Game Show Host Chuck Woolery in which the bikinied playmates flexed their muscles and participated in sporty events.
While living in Los Angeles in the mid-1990s, Charlotte trained for marathon running and completed her first marathon just six months later. In 1994 she founded The Playboy Running Team, becoming the first Playmate in history to receive a Playboy license in the process. Comprised of 10 Playmates and dubbed “Playmates with a Purpose,” the team created awareness and raised money for nonprofit organizations such as the Leukemia Foundation and the Dream Foundation, which helps adults with life-threatening illnesses.
Charlotte has continued to keep fitness and sport at the center of her life. She created a corporate event sponsorship company called International Sponsors Limited, which matches corporate sponsors with sporting events, and has run more than 27 marathons and 5Ks. More recently she has delved into the arts by photographing aspiring models and special events and writing short stories and poems, among other projects.
