Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In
This show popularized a rapid style of vignette comedy show where comedy sketches, punch-lines and gags are edited together in a rapid and almost random format. Regular trademark elements included the joke wall, the dancing woman tattooed with one-liners and the fickle finger of fate award. This series would inspire such shows as Monty Python's Flying Circus and Sesame Street. Code:

They used to show this on BBC2 late night and I remember correctly Ruth Buzzi & Artie Johnson used the same voices and characters in a cartoon called 'Baggy Pants & The Nitwits'-they being the Nitwits, Artie's character was an old man but he was also a superhero who could fly and had a magic walking stick, but would periodically fall over and go to sleep. I also remember Peter Sellers in one episode mimicking the "verrrry interesting...but stupid" German character. Didn't Ruth also have some kind of catchphrase like "No chicken jokes!"?

I think "no chicken jokes" was JoAnne Worley's, wasn't it? Might be wrong, it's been a while!

Yes quite right it was Joanne Whorley who did the chicken jokes thing-my mistake, thanks for correcting it.

I loved Laugh-In. Despite the fact I was 6 years old when it first aired, I got a lot of the comedy. It gave us Goldie Hawn, Ruth Buzzi, Henry Gibson, Arte Johnson among others.
Johnson reprised his WWI German soldier voice for an episode of "Justice League Unlimted" as the Prussian style character Virman Vundaber. And how can we forget Gibson as the leader of the Illinois Nazis in the Blue Brothers. |

I loved Laugh In also. I was born in 1965 but I can remember a little of it being on tv. I didn't really appreciate it until later years. Besides the huge number of guests that were on that show, they never really took themselves too seriously. They left in a lot of the flubs which made the show that much more funny to me. The joke wall at the end of the show was especially raucous.
I remember one of the landmark occasions on the show was when Richard Nixon gave one of the catch phrases, "Sock it to me?" I think he was president at the time. I wish it still came on somewhere. When I had Directv it used to be on Trio.

I loved this show and have been looking for it (either on TV or DVD) for years.
Some of my favorite bits were .... Richard Nixon saying "Sock it to Me ?!?" The handing out of "The Fickle Finger of Fate" award. Arte Johnson's line "Very Interesting .... But Stupid."

One or two decades ago, there was a new television program on that tried to repeat upon the sucess of Laugh-in. It flopped.
Many were tuning into the old re-runs of the original show hoping to see the show with Prez. Nixon. Bill |
