For many years Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis was THE funniest couple on stage and screen.

I'm sat here at my laptop racking my brains trying to come up with the right words to pay my respects to Jerry Lewis. I can't - there's just too much to say. I'd end up with a post that took up a whole webpage.

The man's influence on comedy - particularly movie comedy - since the 50's and 60's is colossal. Name any movie comedian whose career began after 1960 and you can bet you can see a bit of Lewis somewhere in their act. And since he went on to be a filmmaker who took control over every aspect of his movies, I'd argue that he's just as important as Chaplin in his contribution to cinema.

And then there's his later philanthropic and humanitarian work. Making people laugh is one thing; helping to improve the lives of those less fortunate than you? That's something to be remembered for.

No doubt there'll be a lot of VEF members posting their favourite Lewis moments in tribute. Here's mine. It's not actually from a movie, but an outtake from a radio ad he and Dean Martin did. Enjoy!

Kind off off-setting, as originally Sinatra hated Martin pre-Rat Pack, and some of the things he said about Lewis I can't repeat here. Nonetheless, it's the spirit of the telethon, and the gift of laughter that Joseph Levitch gave to millions that matters most.

As summer faded away and school was soon to start, my family would be certain to be home as the MDA Telethon was about to end. Would he meet his goal of $xx,xxx, xxx? My parents always let me stay up and watch the telethon & eat popcorn. I doubt I ever made it past midnight.

In later years I still did all the same things. Silly I know but it was a part of what became the fabric of my life. When he was dismissed as the host I stopped watching. Haven't watched since.

"A lot of people resent that I've been in someone's life for 50 years. Why shouldn't people have an affection for me and what I've done? Didn't I have to be genuine for them to buy into what I did? There are children who grow up today who will not have that when they're 55 years old. With whom will they have it? Name an example for me."

"I get paid for what most kids get punished for."

"I've had great success being a total idiot."

"Postwar America was a very buttoned-up nation. Radio shows were run by censors, Presidents wore hats, ladies wore girdles. We came straight out of the blue - nobody was expecting anything like Martin and Lewis. A sexy guy and a monkey is how some people saw us."

"It'll keep you alive for another 10 years if you get yourself a laugh once a day: either provoke it, or look around in the wildest laboratory in the world, the public."

The first Jerry Lewis movie I ever saw was The Geisha Boy--sometime in the early 70's, when CBS-TV here in the US used to show old movies through the week in prime-time. Learned two things from that movie: Jerry Lewis was a very funny guy, and Marie McDonald had some great legs.

Another favorite was "Visit to a Small Planet"--haven't seen this in years...

I suspect they're laughing up a storm in heaven now...cue up "Send in the Clowns" (performed by Judy Collins).

RIP, Jerry

Default Laughter died a little this weekend

You have to admit this has been a tough weekend for comedy.First Dick, now Jerry. America is a little less humorous at a time it can ill afford to do so.
