Just read that Don Shepherd, Glamorgan's record wicket-taker, has died at 90.

^^ I am not in a position to disagree with you since I have not watched other such matches. But I am sure it was Atherton who stated that he had witnessed at least one D/N game with only one break. That is if I heard (understood him) correctly. Stated during the 'tea' interval on day one.

The West Indies are in quite a hole and do not look capable of test cricket on their showing in this game. Blackwood, who batted well in the first innings, was stumped charging at Moeen; Jonny Bairstow made the stumping look easier than it was. Now the last recognised batsman, Roston Chase, is out and they are 104-7 and need 242 to force England to wear pads again. I feel like I am watching the ghosts of the West Indies. I should be happy England are winning but mainly I am sad.

During my formative years I well remember many a Test Match ending in 3 days. And England were usually on the receiving end.
The Windies - just what is the point of the rebrand other than to distinguish this lot to those who can actually play - are 8 down now. And plenty of time left. Just pity those with tickets for the 4th day. |

I just feel sorry for the West Indies team. Caribbean cricket in the dark and chilly night is a complete nonsense.
I hope that they will be able to make a better account of themselves once we are back to the normal test cricket format. This test has been the most tedious I can remember in 50 years - mainly because the atmosphere and timings are simply not suitable. |

Having had the privilege, and it was, of watching the West Indies at The Oval and Lords in their pomp, with Marshall steaming in with Garner and the firm, Richards, Greenidge, and even once Clive Loyd, swatting the England attack to all corners, I agree with scounds, this is truly sad, delighted with the win, but s sad for West Indies cricket, are they in danger of losing their status?

One, if not, my first experiences of first class cricket was to go with my dad down to St. Helens and watch Glamorgan v West indies (mid 60's)
Still remember it well since arriving at the ground it had been raining and start was delayed. We were not allowed in to the ground until nearer when play was possible and a couple of the touring side came out to sign autographs. Not recognising who scribbled in my book I still did not recognise the name from his 'mark'. Twas a time when tourist sides put out their 2nd Eleven for the less glamorous matches (but atleast back then they did play all the counties) Makes me think I saw another 2nd Eleven at Edgbaston today. |

Windies cricket is probably in a bigger mess than its ever been. The usual merry-go-round of players v suite's as well as little money coming in, poor pitches and little or no support at grass roots level. The last test series against India was played in two thirds empty stadiums. You also have the draw of the money sports in the US which reduces the number who take up cricket more than ever before.
