Yep. They were up for it too, But Eastwood was filming Hang 'Em High at the time and the studio wouldn't release him from his contract to do it. Shame!

Default Winnetou.

I loved these movies when I was kid.. Now if I offered them to my young nephews they would laugh at me !
They prefer Saw and Hostel

There's a dozen of movies based on Winnetou character, from 1962 to 1968.
The first one directed by German director Harald Reinl.
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0718243/

"..First-person narrator Old Shatterhand encounters Winnetou and after initial dramatic events, a true friendship between Old Shatterhand and the Apache Winnetou arises; on many occasions they give proof of great fighting skill but also of compassion for other human beings.
It portrays a belief in an innate "goodness" of mankind, albeit constantly threatened by ill-intentioned enemies."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winnetou

Winnetou was played by French actor Pierre Brice & his friend by US Lex Baxter (ex-Tarzan), but Steward Granger had the role too, at least once.
These movies were based on the novels by German writer Karl May (called sometimes the German Jules Verne or Fenimore Cooper),
and as same as the books encountered an amazing succes during years.
Some sequels were then produced for TV during the 70's, still with Pierre Brice, still with popular success.

Karl May :

Historically, the most intersting stuff is these westerns, filmed in Tito's Yugoslavia, actual Croatia, were the first European ones with a large international audience.
They appeared at the end of the "peplum" genre and were then copyied and developped by many producers to give the more known European or "spaghettis" western.
But "Winnetou" was the real pionneer in that genre.
With a bit search we can find some of them on DVD.
