The Gong Show was a good one that a lot of people want to forget, but it might and I say might be called the seed from which sprang American Idol, Dancing with the Stars, America's (and Britian's) Got Talent.
Now another favorite of mine is one from the 1980's, Press Your Luck. I thought it was a fun show to watch, especially the animaton of the "whammies". Ghaleon |

Who remembers 'The Golden Shot' hosted by the late Bob Monkhouse? It would have been in the late 60s early 70s. The catchphrase was "Bernie, the bolt".

I used to enjoy 'Mastermind' when it was hosted by the late Magnus Magnusson. Many of the shows were recorded in universities and there was a quality about them.

Can we differentiate between pure gameshows, such as The Generation Game, Its A Knockout (Jeux Sans Frontieres) etc and quiz shows where the participants have to show knowledge, nerve and skill?
University Challenge is a quiz show I can bear to watch: it is a serious contest of minds and nerve. But I am still sulking over the horrendous injustice to Gail Trimble last year: BBC, you suck. Mastermind used to be excellent when the late Magnus Magnussen presented it, plus I bet Iceland would never have dug such a massive hole for herself if Magnus had been in charge...He was the epitome of calm, good judgement and common sense. Otherwise, of the ''popular'' (ie lowest common denominator) game shows, I used to enjoy The Crystal Maze and The Krypton Factor: more imaginative formats and didn't treat the audience like dolts and imbeciles.

I guess there should be a seperation of a sort between "game show" and "quiz show". I never really thought about it in that way.
