Inglorious, I'm mostly with you on this one.
Pinkpapercut, I admit that their faux-Marxist, 'working-class-hero' shtick did grate somewhat, especially since, as you rightly point out, in reality they were actually quite posh. But really, you can't fault the quality of their songs. White Riot, Remote Control, White Man in Hammersmith Palais, London Calling, Train In Vain, Should I Stay Or Should I Go - all stone-cold classics. IMHO, the only other band of that era that had as high an output of great songs was The Jam.
The Clash were also musically far more adventurous than most of their peers amongst the first punks. How many other bands of the time were incorporating elements as diverse as reggae (White Man In Hammersmith Palais), traditional folk (English Civil War) and even funk (check out the bass on The Magnificent Seven!) but still remaining commercially sucessful? Certainly not the Pistols or the Buzzcocks!

I did have a thing for Nena of 99 Luftballons fame.

Not bad for a 48 year old

Never been a big fan, but along with Queen stole the show at the original Live Aid. Under a blood red sky, is a classic album.
