Are there photographers amongst us?
I was wondering if there are forum members who were in the business of nude modelling(softcore only) as a photographer during the eighties/nineties or earlier?
Maybe you have spoken with one or more pre 2000 era, any interesting experiences or anecdotes? Whenever i look at photos, especially with a beautiful woman, a story starts developing in my brain with the model and setting giving a starting point and my fantasy takes over. I am a big fan of Hitchcock so i am familiar with good storytelling with limited players and locations. Was there any room for a model to speak their mind where and how the photos were made? What was the mood during a shooting, were there emotions between the model and photographer or was it just pure business? I have seen footage were the photo shoot was recorded but i assume that it often was just the model, photographer and makeup artist that were present and it would be a different atmosphere without the recording of the photo shoot. What strikes me is that you have so many photo series with just a handful of settings, i speak for softcore because i don't look at other stuff. When flicking through a magazine you recognise the scene immediately by that one chair, backdrop, bedding, hell, even the clothing/lingerie and jewellery is the same. The one thing which is different is the model. Was there just one studio where there were those six or seven scenes ready to go for the next model and the next model etc? I look forward to your reply.

I'm not a photographer but I did work (part time) at a minor studio back in the 80's, and did meet a fair few photographers, most were local snappers but some were glamour pro's. All round good bunch as I remember.
As for the same outfits/locations/props, I have discussed that in my post HERE, where we see a lot of the sadly departed Donald H. Milne's work using the same underwear (and sometimes same location/set) with a plethora of models. c.o.

I was a photographer in the late '70s and early '80s in the San Diego/LA area. I had jobs for the Men's magazines and did have experience with women models. They would fuck you in order to get more jobs. It was an interesting time for me. I spent a lot of time on the darkroom floor! There were many many stories!

There were very strict rules about legal issues when taking photographs for the magazine company and the model. Too many times I saw other photographers get the boot and fined (one was jailed) so I took pictures and turned in the film to the company. Having sex with the models was another story as there were no rules and

. . . but this is nothing new. The Old Masters -- you'll see painters like Rembrandt with a bunch of props that he reused in many paintings. Its one of the confusions, people often think that he was painting someone in their own clothes, when in fact he got it off the rack of things that were used again and again. Vermeer, Frans Hals, Gerard ter Borch . . . just a few of the fine painters who worked with a stocked studio. When it comes to vintage erotica, you can see this kind of thing in some of the identified studios . . . Studio Biederer for example http://vintage-erotica-forum.com/t41...er-studio.html . . . and locations get reused. One of the most [in]famous was the "Spider Pool" -- a residence in the Hollywood Hills. http://vintage-erotica-forum.com/t33...d-babylon.html One thing that's notable about PH and PB back in the day -- they had real budgets. For PH centerfold girl, they got flown down to places like the Dominican Republic, with makeup artists, unique costumes, those shoots "look special" . . . because they _were_ special. The studio process is much more like what photographers like Peter Hegre do today . . . its a business, there's very little custom anything to it, just a different girl doing pretty much the same thing in the same place with the same lighting. |
