I love those films, too. I am curious, however, what anyone thinks of any of the remakes out there? I personally didn't like the remake of Halloween (seriously, cussing and gore aren't substitutes for suspense and good acting, IMO) but thought the remake of Friday the 13th was interesting. You can never touch the original "A Nightmare on Elm Street" though. That's a true classic. The remake put me to sleep (pun intended). Fright Night was good too.

I'm a huge movie lover who appreciates different genres but I'm a complete wimp when it comes to horror flicks! The truth is that I'm not a big horror fan but I've seen my share of horror movies. Some flicks from the genre managed to scare the shit out of me when I was a kid. The first horror flick I ever saw was Curse II: The Bite. Laughable today but it had a traumatic effect on me back in the day, only comparable to the one time when I caught my parents having sex. A Nightmare on Elm Street II was scary too, at least to me. It's the part where Freddy lives within that high school boy.
I've seen all the big ones like The Excorist, Omen, Psycho etc. All great flicks but I never considered them horror flicks. More like psychological/suspense/occult/supernatural thrillers. Salem's Lot from 1979 is great! Read the book too. King's It would have been great too if they turned the entire book into a movie or perhaps a TV series with a full season. |

As a long time Clive Barker fan,I've always liked Hellraiser 1987, A low budget masterpiece of queasy body horror,In the words of a twenty something workmate watching it for the first time-"That's f*cked up"

Clive Barker is awesome, the beginning of Nightbreed, before it gets into the supernatural side, is not something you would want a child to watch, they would never sleep.

I guess I'm old fashioned but I grew up watching the old Universal and RKO horror movies on TV. Back in the 70s, here in L.A. we had a weekly show called "Fright Night" hosted by a guy named Seymour. I still love Karloff, Lugosi, Chaney, and the rest. Now I watch them on Bluray, although sometimes I watch "Svengoolie", which is a current Saturday night horror show.

Stigmata, I ain't real big on horror , but Stigmata is kind of between a thriller and horror. About where I like horror films. Not sure why many didn't like it much, maybe the religion based story and not real gory I don't care, I like it, or maybe it was Patricia Arquette that has something to do with it

And let us not forget all of the monster movies with Lon Chaney, Bella Lagousi and Boris Karloff.

Lon Chaney Snr was a master of the genre. His son, Creighton Tull Chaney, " Lon Jnr", less so. Boris Karloff, William Henry Pratt, was not perhaps the best actor in the World, but His monsters had a humanity that few actors could match.

Old School Horror
Quote:
Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, The Phantom of the Opera, and The Hunchback of Notre Dame are some of my favorite classical horror films. I read Frankenstein by Mary Shelley and loved the depth that she gave to Frankenstein's monster and thought Boris personified it perfectly. It's a shame that that level of depth in a horror film has been lost throughout the years. I think it's much more suspenseful and scary to see a little humanity in a character, and then see it get completely shattered.
