Windows Movie Maker crashes/freezes
Hi there
Recently my Windows Movie Maker XP version has crashed and frozen up dozens of times and just today I tried to make an on-screen credit appear and fade but as soon as I added it to the timeline the bloody thing crashed. Does anyone know how to fix it? And before you say try YouTube I did several times wading through loads of fixes which didn't work so it has nothing to do with the codecs or filters-UNLESS something is blocking it. Can anyone suggest a cure OR something that I might have overlooked, and not mentioned by these people on their Youtube videos? Thanks. GM

Yeah I tried that as a last resort-short of threatening my machine with a large stick a la John Cleese(Basil Fawlty thrashes his car when it won't start) and I have also removed another player BUT now it crashes when I attempt to add any credits or on-screen titles-VERY frustrating!!!

UPDATE: I downloaded K-Lite Codec Pack last night and got back the view of the video clips BUT it still crashes or freezes on me when I try to do any editing or trimming OR try to add an on-screen credit-HELP!!!! I think my days of making videos are over thanks to Microsoft-everyone hates them for withdrawing updates to their products for XP users-you underestimated your world clients MS.

Windows XP Movie Maker crashed on me from day one, I believe.
Windoze 7 seems more stable although still crashes and fails, but I miss little things like 'Flip Horizontally' and the familiar format (etc). I see only 'rotate' in 'Live Movie Maker', which spins you round but takes you back to where you started. I'm looking forward to the day when I sell my property and can afford an Apple Mac. On a not wholly unrelated note Cyberlink Power Producer provided interesting alternatives, if not another process to an end result in conjunction with movie maker, before monitor screen resolution and differing XP/7-64 bit resolution became an issue. I tried Pinnacle Studio which was similar to XP's Movie Maker and also crashes and a Ulead disc I don't think I ever loaded. Find myself missing the days when I had a life. |

I tired another reinstall of MMk2 and soon after that I edited a videoclip and that went fine, then it froze me out, so I restarted, and went to add a credit first and lo and behold...it crashed again. It seems I can't do anything with it now and I've followed video after video and tip after tip online and at forum(Microsoft) and NOTHING works. I've even removed two programs that had added some codecs and that doesn't seem to have done the trick. I have Wondershare's video maker thing so I am going to try that. If not, well it looks like my days of making videos are over. And yes I have Windows Live Movie Maker on my laptop, so I tried that and as I was saving it guess what THAT crashed as well-sheesh, you can't win either way!!
It just shows how piss-poor Microsoft are/were with their movie making systems. Thank goodness it worked long enough for me to make a special 50th Anniversary video with music and pictures scanned in of my parents four years ago-I'd been working on the idea for months.

Just a thought GM.... are you trying to insert one specific image at the time it always crashes..? Maybe its the image that's causing the issue? Just a side thought. PhEg.

Windows Movie Maker is a tough product to use, definitely not being worthy of installing all of those codecs. A free package, though it hasn't been updated recently, but comes with tons of codecs already included, is DVD Flick. It doesn't have a ton of features, about the same as WMM, but it has just about every codec that you might need, plus is quite stable. One caveat is that it doesn't handle picture CD's or DVD's, however, a separate disk made with WMM is a decent option.
