The return of Martin Guerre
The Return of Martin Guerre (Le Retour de Martin Guerre) is a 1982 French film directed by Daniel Vigne, and starring Gérard Depardieu. It was based on a case of imposture in 16th century France, involving Martin Guerre.
The film relates a historical case of alleged identity theft. Martin Guerre leaves his young wife in a small French village to go fight in a war, and to travel. Eight or nine years later, Martin (played by Depardieu) returns to resume his life. The man is initially acknowledged and welcomed by the wife, family, and friends because he knows the intimate details of his former life. As time passes, however, vagabonds identify Martin as Arnaud of the neighbouring village of Tilh, but the villagers dismiss these claims as lies. The film was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film by the U.S. National Board of Review of Motion Pictures. |

Sticking with it due to Miss Palmer
Am
Half an hour in and finding it a weak cross between Get Carter and Hardcore . A guy arrives from South Africa to Los Angeles with just a few hundred dollars to his name. After getting a desperate call from his sister wanting help. Twenty four hours later he learns that his sister has been murdered. Now he has six days left to find out what happened and track down his nephew. Acting from all concerned is very good. Is alright to pass the time. Just so samey and meandering. Certainly not a patch on Get Carter.

It Lives in the Attic (2016)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt6212020/ As we all know lots of damn peculiar and often frightening things can be found in Attics A few minutes in and just a tent a canoe and an abandoned shack, nothing with an attic, it takes 11 minutes before it gets into first gear but it soon throws everything it can at you to try to get your attention. I think this is going to seem like a very long film It's actually an anthology of sorts and not what I hoped it would be https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d6O7wKp93qc

The Long Goodbye (1973)
Trailer Private eye Philip Marlowe (Elliott Gould) does his friend Terry Lennox (Jim Bouton) a favor and drives him to the US-Mexican border at Tijuana. When Marlowe returns home, he is arrested and questioned by the cops about his whereabouts the previous night. He learns that Terry's wife Sylvia has been murdered, with Terry being a suspect and Marlowe an accomplice. But he is released after a few days and told that the case has been closed since Lennox was found dead in Mexico. However, his friend has left Marlowe with some more trouble like the question of the missing $350.000 he was supposed to deliver to the local mobster Marty Augustine (Mark Rydell). Meanwhile, Marlowe is hired by Eileen Wade (Nina van Pallandt) to find her writer husband Roger (Sterling Hayden). It soon becomes clear to Marlowe that all those cases are somehow related. Robert Altman's adaptation of Raymond Chandler's eponymous novel is truly a child of its time as it has a very strong 60s/70s hippie vibe. At times it's not quite clear whether this is a serious adaptation or a parody of the detective fiction genre. I'm not sure if Gould delivered a believable Marlowe but there sure ain't no surface he can't use to light a match. |

The Way of the Gun (2000) Benicio Del Toro and Ryan Philippe are petty but violent criminals who kidnap a girl being paid $1m to be a surrogate mother. As the baby is for a gangster and his wife, several henchmen and other ruthless characters head after them to Mexico. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0202677/ I enjoyed this movie - better that the average gangster shoot 'em up. Definately worth a watch

The Serpent and the Rainbow (1988)
Trailer In 1985, the Harvard anthropologist Dennis Alan (Bill Pullman) narrowly escapes the Amazon and returns to Boston where he is hired by a pharmaceutical company to acquire a "voodoo drug" in Haiti. He's familiarized with the case of a Haitian man called Christophe (Conrad Roberts) who died in 1978 but was seen alive several years later. By purchasing the drug, the pharmaceutical company hopes to be able to create a powerful anesthetic. Alan arrives in a country still ruled by the dictator "Baby Doc" Duvalier and on the brink of revolution. The daily lives of the people in Haiti are ruled by fear of Duvalier's secret police, the Tonton Macoute, and the Voodoo religion. The job he accepted sends Alan on a nightmarish trip through the world of a brutal police state and the occult. For me this is Wes Craven's best film. Very atmospheric and scary, superb acting, a great setting and excellent music by Brad Fiedel. This film is proof that Craven was much more than just a B movie director. |

L.A. Confidential (1997)
- Phenomenal. Blood Runs Cold (2011) - Decent low budget slasher. - Clearly takes a lot of influence from the notably superior Norwegian slasher trilogy Cold Prey. Comparison... Cold Prey... Blood Runs Cold... - Blood Runs Cold's setting while not as epic as its influencer, still makes for some beautiful snow bound imagery. - Both females of the cast get naked, which is refreshing. - That said the cast is severely bland. |

The 2012 film, Moonrise Kingdom.
An adorable, bittersweet coming of age film about two twelve year old's living on the island of New Penzance who fall in love and decide to run away. All manner of crazy stuff then ensures before a happy ending, The two fourteen year old leads, Kara Hayward and Jared Gilman are amazing and they are ably supported by the assembly cast of Bruce Willis, Ed Norton, Billy Murray, Frances McDormand, Tilda Swinton, Harvey Keitel and Bob Balaban. Three shy first kisses up. |
