Are you kidding me? You must have been watching a different DeNiro than I have been watching since "Goodfellas". He has executed some great performances in some excellent films (long ago) but he's also done a lot of real schlock in the past twenty years?

Back to your question. There are a few actors whose films I will avoid like the plague. Tom Cruise and Julia Roberts just to name two. Can't even bear to look at pictures of them (especially her) much less sit through two hours of a film that they are in.

Al Pacino is my favorite actor. Even Al can take a mediocre role in a mediocre film and present something that I will enjoy.

Yes and no. If I know and like an actor then his/her new movie will certainly peek my interest. I'll watch the trailer and read the Wiki, which is more than I'd do for a random movie, but that doesn't necessarily mean I'll watch the movie.
However, that's different for writers and directors. I would guaranteed want to watch just about anything from Jim Jarmush, Woody Allen, Charle Kauffman, Zack Snyder (Yes, I'm a Zack Snyder fan, screw the haters. ) and a couple of others.

As far as the opposite, I do avoid certain actors like Vin Deseal or Jack Black because they mostly don't make the type of movies I'm interested in, it's not really person. The only actor who I can say that I really hate is Adam Sandler. I'm dreading his involvement in the upcoming The Meyerowitz Stories, I'm hoping his presence doesn't ruin it for me.

No. There are no actors who I like so much that I would go see a film because they're in it. The plot's the thing.

Only time I do it for the actors themselves is if I have known them in the past.

I go for genre before actor/actress although there are some actors I would avoid.
Tom Cruise (grin on a stick) and Richard Gere, who once 'sniffed', literally, his way through a love scene (what is that, 'method acting'? Just blow your nose you moron.), are both massively over-rated as actors IMO and I wouldn't watch anything with either one in voluntarily.

On the other hand, I avoided 'Out of Africa' because I felt that Meryl Streep had been over-hyped and regretted it when I did finally watch it because the story was so strong, and she and Redford had such chemistry that the final scenes following Redford's character's death had me in tears.

No, on the whole, action/adventure movies such as the 'Bourne' series that have a strong plot, characterisation and good script. And if Jessica Alba's in it so much the better LOL.

Thumbs up Clint Eastwood and Kung Fu Panda

In the past I was terribly disappointed by several "bankable" actors.
The only one I still watch his films as director or actor when I see his name is Clint Eastwood.
He's a good professionnal.

But surprisingly my new superstar is a cartoon actor.
Kung Fu Panda.
The 3 episodes of the Saga were funny and each episode was artistically better than the previous one.

I prefer cartoons than actors films as long as there are no songs.

So, the topic goes: Do you watch a movie because of the main performers?
and not: Do you don't want to watch a movie because of the main performers?

Besides: Personally i liked Colin Farrell in TIGERLAND and IN BRUGES
