Lightbulb Arthur Schopenhauer

Religion is the masterpiece of the art of animal training, for it trains people as to how they shall think.

National character is only another name for the particular form which the littleness, perversity and baseness of mankind take in every country. Every nation mocks at other nations, and all are right.

Every state of welfare, every feeling of satisfaction, is negative in its character; that is to say, it consists in freedom from pain, which is the positive element of existence.

All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.

Talent hits a target no one else can hit; Genius hits a target no one else can see.

Nature shows that with the growth of intelligence comes increased capacity for pain, and it is only with the highest degree of intelligence that suffering reaches its supreme point.

There is no absurdity so palpable but that it may be firmly planted in the human head if you only begin to inculcate it before the age of five, by constantly repeating it with an air of great solemnity.

It is difficult to find happiness within oneself, but it is impossible to find it anywhere else.

The two enemies of human happiness are pain and boredom.

Without books the development of civilisation would have been impossible. They are the engines of change, windows on the world, "Lighthouses" as the poet said "erected in the sea of time." They are companions, teachers, magicians, bankers of the treasures of the mind, Books are humanity in print.

There is no opinion, however absurd, which men will not readily embrace as soon as they can be brought to the conviction that it is generally adopted.

Life is full of troubles and vexations, that one must either rise above it by means of corrected thoughts, or leave it.

The life of every individual is really always a tragedy, but gone through in detail, it has the character of a comedy.

Pleasure is never as pleasant as we expected it to be and pain is always more painful. The pain in the world always outweighs the pleasure. If you don't believe it, compare the respective feelings of two animals, one of which is eating the other.

As the biggest library if it is in disorder is not as useful as a small but well-arranged one, so you may accumulate a vast amount of knowledge but it will be of far less value than a much smaller amount if you have not thought it over for yourself.

We forfeit three-quarters of ourselves in order to be like other people.

Life is short and truth works far and lives long: let us speak the truth.

Genius and madness have something in common: both live in a world that is different from that which exists for everyone else.

I have not yet spoken my last word about women. I believe that if a woman succeeds in withdrawing from the mass, or rather raising herself from above the mass, she grows ceaselessly and more than a man.

Truth that is naked is the most beautiful, and the simpler its expression the deeper is the impression it makes; this is partly because it gets unobstructed hold of the hearer’s mind without his being distracted by secondary thoughts, and partly because he feels that here he is not being corrupted or deceived by the arts of rhetoric, but that the whole effect is got from the thing itself.

The greatest of follies is to sacrifice health for any other kind of happiness.

Truth is most beautiful undraped.

He who can see truly in the midst of general infatuation is like a man whose watch keeps good time, when all clocks in the town in which he lives are wrong. He alone knows the right time; what use is that to him?

The person who writes for fools is always sure of a large audience.........

These are a few of my favourite quotes

These are some quotes by authors unknown to me. If you know who should get credit, please send me a message so that a small fraction of my fathomless ignorance will be cured. On the other side of the coin, I have no reluctance to 'improve' anonymous quotes and make them mine. Sort of.

Chaste makes waste

Children are like farts: you don’t mind your own, but other people’s are unbearable

Choose your friends carefully; your enemies will choose you

A Clean desk is a sign of cluttered drawers

Cleaning a house where children live is like shoveling the walk while it’s still snowing

Cleanliness is next to impossible

A Clear conscience is very likely due to a bad memory

Clearly stated instructions will consistently produce multiple interpretations

Here is one of my favorite lines in a movie. It is from "Cool Hand Luke" Paul Newman has just been captured after he escaped from a Southern prison work camp. He is lying in the dust. Above him on a small rise is the boss of the camp played by that wonderful actor Strother Martin. Martin says to the other prisoners of the camp and to the guards standing around. "What we've got here is failure to communicate"

Another one if from "In The Heat of the Night". Rod Steiger who plays the sheriff of a small southern town has just found out that Sidney Poitier is a big time detective in Philadelphia. Rod Steiger asks Virgil ( Sidney Poitier ) what do they call him there and Virgil says rather loud "They call me Mr. Tibbs"

Here are two more favorite lines from Clint Eastwood westerns:

In the movie "High Plains Drifter" Clint at a bar after being challenged by a group of thugs says " I'm faster that you'll ever live to be"

In Clint's movie "The Outlaw Josey Wales" he is challenged to a duel by two Confederate soldiers. They hesitate and Clint becomes impatient and says " Well are you goin to shoot or whistle Dixie"

In the classic comedy "A Day at the Races", early in the movie Groucho Marx's character, Dr. Hugo Hackenbush, attends to a man who has just been knocked unconscious. He grabs his wrist to check his pulse, and says, "Either this man is dead or my watch has stopped."

From the original "True Grit"

Rooster Cogburn: [cocks his gun] Mr. Rat... I have a writ here says you're to stop eating Chen Lee's cornmeal forthwith. Now it's a rat writ, writ for a rat, and this is lawful service of the same. See? Doesn't pay any attention to me.
