Default Firefox 11-12 trying to 'remember' folders - arghh!

There are about 150 actresses/models that I download when new posts come up. Until recently, downloading was easy - I'd get the pics up in tabs and download them into the same folder. And I could trust that Firefox's 'Save as' dialogue would take me to the folder I last downloaded into, without having to check.

Now, a load of pics are going into the wrong folders because some new 'innovation' in Firefox is trying to remember which folder I downloaded to from a particular site. Consequently I have a ton of pics in the wrong folders.

I like using Firefox, because it's where I have the Gmail account which I use for many things, not just VE alerts about posts, and I really don't want to use another browser just for this.

Does anyone know of a way to stop this insane new 'feature'?

No, I have the same problem with it, but sort the folders by date to see what's been downloaded into the wrong folders recently, then swap the files over. But rather than the sites used, I thought firefox was looking at the names of the files, and comparing them with names of files in other folders recently used, and putting the new files into the folders where it found the closest match - a real pain!

There are lots of comments about this on the Firefox help forum, and there doesn't seem to be a single, simple fix. Hopefully, bearing in mind the number of complains, there will soon be an updated version of Firefox which sorts out the issue.

On previous occasions when Firefox has irritated me, I've temporarily gone back to an earlier version.

Not sure if this is your problem.

Go to Tools > Options > General (tab) > make sure that option 'Always ask me where to save files' is selected. Press OK.

Unfortunately that won't help. It simply toggles between the place you specify that your files will ALWAYS be downloaded to, or gives you a pop-up dialogue to make your own selection. Perhaps they'll give us some control over the ghastly per-site feature in the next update.

I just can't see how this new 'feature' could be anything but annoying. I can't imagine a scenario in which it would be useful!

After some research I found the following and it seems to work:

Firefox 11+ versions have support via browser.download.lastDir.savePerSite pref to disable the feature to remember the download directory based upon the URL.

The browser.download.lastDir.savePerSite pref doesn't exist by default (it is hidden). Go to about:config and create a new Boolean pref with the name browser.download.lastDir.savePerSite and set the value to false.

Thanks for these comments. I was going to update but now not so sure.

And perhaps I'm really behind. I'm on Fox 3.6.28 for Mac. Did I actually miss 9 genuine versions? A history on wiki lists a bunch of "rapid releases".

Think I'll wait a bit. 3.6.28 works just fine for what I do.

The 3.6 series is no longer supported with security updates
ended 24/4/2012

Firefox versions 4 through 9 had all reached end-of-life status while Mozilla continued supporting Firefox 3.6 with security updates. Coinciding with a proposal to cater to Enterprise users with optional Extended Support Releases beginning in 2012 based upon Firefox 10,

Mozilla discontinued support for Firefox 3.6 on April 24, 2012.

Everything explained on 3.6 wiki page

Older version sites have previous ones which many are still using because the 3rd party developers of add-ons/extensions havent caught up

You might try Comodo Dragon as a browser. It is Google Chrome with all the frigging Google spyware removed. You can get it at www.comodo.com or cnet.download.com and probably a lot of other places.

I am seeing the same problem, and am using FF 10.2 (I think the LTS version?) (Windoze, yuk)

I couldn't understand the behavior as FF kept trying to us the 'Download' folder in My Documents, so I just created a shortcut there to my normal download folder: it just makes it easier to move stuff though doesn't solve the prob.

Thanks for raising it, I hadn't worked out it was a 'feature'

the about:config solution looks interesting though (thanks)
