Seriously, I think that Gauntlet was a light-hearted version of D&D, similar to how Tunnels & Trolls was a board game like that (or maybe Crossbows & Catapults, et al.)

The '80s were a time of strong imagination, and as a certain rapper said on CNN:

"There's never going to be another decade like the '80s."
Ahem!

Can I say that I'm glad you mentioned Crossbows and Catapults. I can remember seeing that advertised on TV at the time:

It's not until you mentioned it that I suddenly remembered it!

If playing Horizon Zero Dawn labels me a dweeb...it's a badge I wear proudly. I kick arse at this game.

@Everyone: Thank you for all of your responses so far.

I will admit that I tried spending 2-3 hours a morning, for about a week, learning how to work the Overworld tile set (world map tiles) on a large 250 * 160 sized map for the planet on which my RPG might take place. This sounds like an inordinate amount of time (~15-20 hours?!) but I learned it all the way, and made a believable planet that looks like a much larger Civilization map, which were only 50 * 80 back in the early '90s.

Pictures may follow...

@Everyone: Here are the pictures, at the risk of being a dweeb who likes Final Fantasy and/or [A]D&D a little:

What's a dweeb? Is it like a hobgoblin or something .

My first RPG was Might & Magic 2 on an Amstrad PC.

My last (current) is Pillars of Eternity.

I've never played the pen and paper variety or dressed up like a... dweeb?

But for me they are the best computer games ever .

@gordian_knot: A "dweeb" is a lot like a "geek": a person who is completely inept with conversations, women, or style. A "nerd" used to be thought of in that way, but is now just anyone who has some intelligence and/or likes a certain subject (Macintosh, Star Wars, fantasy or science fiction) that requires intelligence to deeply understand. The "nerd" used to dress the same way as the "dweeb" or "geek", but not anymore. Things have changed in 25+ years since I was called a "nerd" on the first day of middle school in 1989.

But to answer your question completely, the "dweeb" is not a hobgoblin or an orc... Just an '80s term that is synonymous with being nerdy.

@gordian_knot: And by the way, Jon Van Caneghem's first two Might & Magic games were my favorite games of the '80s in RPGs. Totally old-school on an Apple IIC with 128K of RAM!

Here are some pictures of the volcano map I have been working on. The rooms are finished, but the enemies and/or characters will have to wait, because I don't know how to script with RPG Maker yet:

And, here are a couple more maps I have been working on; the maps themselves are 200*200 and the rooms are mostly finished:

I got an old Intellivison and some game cartridges that still work. The grandkids think it's some kind of hoax I'm perpetrating on them, but back then the graphics were the last word in state of the art.
