Not the best of mornings, but Root & Stokes currently digging in. Could have been far worse but for the sub fielder, only he will know why he leapt in the air and tried to catch it one handed rather than taking two steps back for a simple catch. A life for Root which might well prove vital.

Root, Cook, Wood - what a lot of double O players!

We've also had Gooch, Roope and other Cooks and Woods...and Aussie David Boon. Any more double Os?

A few, though not only surnames.
Various Cook[e]s... broth spoiled?

Stokes has a rush of blood and heads back to the hutch.

Double O's Woolley, Lar, Under & Colling as you say lots of wood.

Windies - Hooper & Bishoo

Pak - Mahmood, Farooq & Masood, although my favourite from the 83 World Cup was Shahid Mahboob.

Amazing innings from Joe Root today - but most impressive is the palpable depth of affection the cricket-going public have for this talented young man.

The shot of the day for me though was a cut, just backward of square, for four by Moeen. That left both me and Mr Amla open mouthed.

Just one question.

What would the English Test side be without Jo Root ?.

Jo did have the luck gods shining down on him today. But that is how it falls sometimes.

And as for Ballance two terrible involvements in reviews. As the more senior player he should have told Jennings to go for the one that the umpire got so badly wrong and then confounded the issue by going for one which was plumper than a plump.

The middle order and late middle order are good - and some excellent bowlers. But I do agree that there is a problem with batsmen two and three which has persisted for too long. If England could just get that right...

A telegram was received today in Taunton, a trifle overdue, and you might think strange in this day and age, but with Papal Power and divine intervention anything is possible, addressed to all the players and coaches, it was from the Pope himself, thanking them for restoring his faith in miracles after the result against Yorkshire!!!
