I hope he stays on and amasses run after run. I also Imagine Root will take on the role. Good luck to him if he does.

I hope he continues to play test and that Mr Root gets the nod, but you can never tell with the ECB.

Just to hope that the burden of captaincy does not affect Root's form if he, indeed, gets the nod.

I saw some stats yesterday about the top 4 batsmen in the world rankings, 3 of whom are captains. All of these have improved their averages and performances as captain. I hope this is the same for Joe (assuming he gets the job)

That's interesting because sometimes there's a fear that promoting a leading batsman into a captain may adversely affect their batting... well, there has been here, anyhow.

It would be particularly interesting to compare (leading) batsmen-captains' performances before/after the promotion: did they get better/worse/stay much the same? A similar comparison of (leading) bowling-captains might also be interesting. One can think of certain individuals who were very successful bowling-captains, but the before/after measure might be the more useful analysis.

Cook as Captain Average 46.53 in the ranks 46.36
Gooch 58.72 and 35.93
Vaughan 36.02 and 50.98

just shows that our batsmen don't necessarily match these.

Steve Smith 51.8 and 73.7
Virat Kohli 41.1 and 64.0
Kane Williamson 49.2 and 55.0

I guess we just have to wait. Another interesting point to consider is would he be captain in all formats.

So of those 6 Gooch is the only one whose batting was better as captain, while Cook's was on a par? Not sure if Williamson has been (I assume these are all test figures?) captain long enough to meaningfully compare. & not that Steve Smith's batting as capt. is at all poor.

No need to change white ball captaincy. Morgan is doing a perfectly good job. Too much pressure to do all when there is an effective skipper in situ.

Interesting that the ECB have interviewed Stokes and Broad as well as Root.

Surely they are not about to say to Joe "Maybe next time". More, methinks, of someone to look after the vice. Err I meant Vice Captain.

Why not Buttler ? Not great test form last time out but he was not exactly alone in that dept.
