if the error-number is based on HTTP error codes then it's (temporary) "service unavailable", either because the server is overcharged or under maintainance.

no idea if they also fire such an error if your free account has reached its limit of 50GB. i would assume a different error message in such a case.

I've had a MF free account for years, and in fact didn't use it
for a long long time. When I decided to start using it again I
was amazed to find those ancient files were still there, and
have used it regularly recently.

Tried to log in today, for the first time in many weeks, and it
bombed me out, saying I hadn't logged in for 14 days, and it
wanted me to set up a new account. Maybe some new T & Cs?

The thought of having lost over 10 Gb of my VEF uploads was
a bit of a worry, but I found a work-around.

Clear cache, and all MF cookies. type in Mediafire.com in browser.
Try and log in. If it denies access, hit "Forgot password", and go
through the E-mail process of choosing a new password.
It worked, and all my files are still there..... Relief!
Remeber your browser might have saved the old password for
logging in, so that will need amending.

If I had set up a "new account", using the same E-mail, I wonder
if all my files would then have been deleted?

I'll have to try and remember to login regularly from now on.

Got a virus warning today and AVG blocked the download. I've seen this warning flagged
up on other sites recently, but it seems to disappear after a few days.

Question

In my experience, when I click on links to files hosted on Mediafire, sometimes, I'm taken to a standard page with a bit of information about the file and the actual download link, but sometimes, my browser (Firefox) tries to start downloading the file right away. Why is that so?

Default Just a guess

the server the file is on probably has a lot of available spots so no need for the stalling for time download page

I occasionally get it on chrome

Mediafire is spotty in that regard. A link sometimes refuses to work in Jdownloader, but is still alive and well in the Firefox browser. Still, the download speed is more than acceptable for a free host. Sometimes it's even very fast.
