Born New York City 1906; died 2003

Gold and bronze medal winner at 1924 Olympics.

First woman to swim the English Channel, August 1926. 35 miles in 14.5 hours, beating the times of all five men who had previously made the swim. Honored by ticker-tape parade up Broadway.

"Everywhere where she swung her racket and warmed the spectators hearts with her magic smile, she unknowingly inspired young girls to play tennis the way she did.
