Since the formation of the NBA in 1946 as the BAA, seven US cities have lost two or more pro sports franchises in the four major league sports.

In baseball, New York lost the Brooklyn Dodgers to Los Angeles and the Giants to San Francisco in 1957.

In basketball, the Chicago Stags, an original BAA team folded in 1950. The Chicago Packers were an expansion team in 1961, changed their name to the Zephyrs in 1962 and left for Baltimore in 1963. The former Zephyrs were a replacement for the original Baltimore Bullets who played from 1947 until 1955. The second Bullets team stayed in Charm City until 1973 when they moved to Washington, becoming the Capital Bullets, Washington Bullets and finally, the Washington Wizards. San Diego was given an expansion franchise called the Rockets in 1967. In 1971, the Rockets blasted off to Houston. The Buffalo Braves moved to San Diego in 1978 and became the Clippers, who abandoned San Diego for LA in 1984.

In football, Los Angeles has lost three teams. The Rams moved to LA from Cleveland in 1946 and then moved to St. Louis in 1994. The Chargers were a charter member of the AFL in 1960, but they surrendered LA to the Rams and left for San Diego in 1961. And the Raiders came to LA in 1983 then returned to Oakland in 1995. Curiously, all three teams have been rumored to return to LA. Football-mad Dallas has lost two teams. The Texans were the first major league team in Texas in 1952 and by the end of the season they were playing out of Hershey, PA and at the end of the season, they folded, the last NFL team to do so. The AFL Texans were the charter franchise of the league, but owner Lamar Hunt moved the team to Kansas City in 1963 for the good of the AFL.

In hockey, Atlanta has had two franchises flee. The Flames were born in 1972 and moved to Calgary. The Thrashers were Atlanta's second chance at the NHL in 1999, but in 2011 they also fled north to Winnipeg.

New York and Los Angeles lost teams in the same year, 1957 for NY and 1994 for LA. Atlanta lost both it's teams to Canadian cities.
