I already said in the "commie topic" I didn't understand why Socialist authorities didn't let people who wanted to live in Capitalist countries to leave their countries.

Were they allowed to emigrate ?

My Polish colleague travelled several times in Switzerland when Poland still was Socialist, but he had to ask the right to travel abroad.

You see, People in the east wanted to escape to the west
But also, People in the west didn't want to escape to the east

So, the east and west being mortal enemies, it would be an admission of a flawed system by the east by allowing them to move freely at their own will. If you cannot see that and look for other reasons then you're just way too ... i better not say it

Mum and Dad both escaped to Italy, how they did that I don't know, Dad never told us. Australia was looking for Immigrants, they had a choice of moving to the US or here, Dad chose here. Some of my Uncles and Aunties did the same, some came here, some to the US. A small few stayed behind.

That is so ridiculous.

Tons of people wanted to escape their Communist run shitholes. And in point of fact those East Bloc degrees were not considered kosher in the West, I have talked to more than one escapee who was pissed that they had to get help going back to school because no one thought their crappy Commie education qualified them for a job.

They had to start over, but were still willing to do so, even if they had to mop floors in the meantime to get money. That speaks volumes.

And the Communists were perfectly willing to shoot anyone trying to get out.

Because in a Communist state, a person trying to leave is not considered an individual with their own thoughts and emotions and tastes, but just a cog gone awry in the machine. So shoot them, and get another cog.

Well, I lived in this system for 20 years, and I can tell you that you sound almost exactly like our career communists with party book when they talked about the West.
