Gloria Lasso, l'étranger au paradis (stranger in paradise) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9lw-zQcZ58 In the early 60's, I was not more of 2 or 3 years old, living in Algeria (french colony at the time) and I dunno why my parents (italian for my Mom, polish/german for my Dad) were addicts to a spanish singer singing in french... Maybe to learn the language. So I did (with a lot of cheesy european songs). This vinyl is still in the family's archives.

It was either one of these three, I don't remember which was first so Im guessing. I distinctly remember hearing the Mendes and Masekela songs as child but there's also a ghost whisper of The Wailers song in my mind around that time that I could have only heard before we left the UK when I was five, since no one played any reggae in the US until the 70s. At least I don't remember hearing any other reggae until then.

I acquired older records later but the earliest thing I can definitely remember on the radio was Dean Martin singing Everybody Loves Somebody. We only listened to it at lunchtime on a Sunday when Family Favourites was on. I also remember the Clitheroe Kid, which must have been on at about the same time (before or after). That was a weird program.

My mom liked a lot of the 1960s folk and things in that vain. My dad was a little more rock and roll-ish.
Song I vividly recall hearing at a really young age: From mom: Lay Down (candles in the rain) --Melanie Safka http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0-nvYIvrScM Brand New Key --Melanie Safka. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cvIjQSFLb3U Downtown --Petula Clark http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sku-1hqA5xw California Dreaming --Mamas and Papas http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dN3GbF9Bx6E Red Rubber Ball --The Cyrkle http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbDKN0dk54M The Troggs -- Love Is All Around http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ut5uC91FcbI Winchester Cathedral --New Vaudeville Band http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NnVYa2svIQQ Eve of Destruction --Barry McGuire http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ntLsElbW9Xo Dad played the entire catalogs of The Beatles, The Kinks, Jefferson Airplane, Moody Blues, Small Faces, Jeff Beck Group and The Who. Geez the old man loved the Who. 5:15 might be the first song I ever knew all of the words to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ntLsElbW9Xo. Which didn't impress mom very much. If I had to say the absolute first. It would probably be My Sweet Lord by George Harrison. My very catholic mom hated that song and to this date says if "yoko wouldn't have broken up the Beatles, those Hare Krishnas would have." Have listen if you somehow haven't heard the song before: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0kNGnIKUdMI

My father listened to classical music and I was never into that. I had older brothers who bought records and those were my first musical influences. Jimi Hendrix, CSN&Y, Cream. The popular rock stuff from the late 60s. The first album I ever bought with my own money was 'Don't Shoot Me, I'm Only The Piano Player" by Elton John. 1972, I think.

"Surrey With The Fringe On Top". From Oklahoma! This must have been 1957 - 1958 when I was about five.
