Interestingly, the species that took over the top of the food chain after the so called demise of the dinosaurs was a giant bird called the Terror Bird. Here's a picture of one, it's resemblance to dinosaurs is obvious.

There is mounting evidence that later species of some dinosaurs, including the great predators, were covered in feathers. This is why I don't believe that the nuclear winter caused by the comet actually killed all of the dinosaurs. The real downfall to the surviving dino's was the rise of the mammals who were better equipped to handle the colder weather.
