1GB internet speeds but very slow downloads

Don't want to get 2GB into a 4Gb d/l and then get stuck. That is like going back to the bad old days of cranky dial-up. I am sure many here can share horror stories of bad file downloads from those days. I certainly can.

Oh no doubt. I've got an ethernet cable snaked from the PC, around the wall, behind the tv, into the entry way where AT&T had to install the equipment. It's not the prettiest thing in the world but in an apartment building, it's going to have to be that way. I'll leave the wifi for the Xbox One X, my phone when I need it, and my laptop when racing season starts. It will be fine for those.

But I am correct in assuming that when I get slow downloads from a host say like Keep2Share is running slow but Depositfiles is flying, that's it's a problem with that particular host and not on my end?

Spot on. A lot depends on the size of the pipe the host uses, how busy the host server is that the file resides on, and the routing (number of hops between you and the host). There are a lot of variable factors involved on the net when it comes to connecting from point A to Point B and any issues in between can cause that particular connection to slow down. It won't be on your end unless everything suddenly slows down or drops out completely.

By the way, if you have a wireless adapter in your desktop, manually disable the wireless adapter so it cannot connect at the same time as the wired connection. Both adapters connected together can have the effect of screwing up the true speed of the wired connection.

Bowlinggreen is very much on the right track there, though I would say "invest in a really good wireless router" and you can get decent wireless speeds, though if you have a very fast fiber link, he's right, even the best router might not keep up, especially if there are other loads.

Pretty much everything in my apartment was having trouble-- downloads weren't great, the internet connected TV lagged, was painful to try to get it to get stuff from Netflix. Switched from years old combo cable modem/wireless router to a dedicated Nighthawk router, and everything performed, much, much better.

A high quality wireless router is the best bang for buck improvement in system performance I've ever made . . .

An ambiguous question is: Which router did AT&T give you?
From hitting this World-Wide Web site for its speedtest, it seems that if AT&T provided the Arris NVG378 router, it did not do you well. You {but then, how would you know? } should have queried for the Arris BGW210 or 5268ac.
If you go to DSL Reports, I caution you that its forums are pretty engrossing. There are a good number of savvy surfers posting and responding.
