Just look at the following example:

I don't know in the USA, but in my country we can defend ourself our own case without the help of a lawyer and sometimes it's much better.
One my friends did it brilliantly after he understood that his lawyer did nothing else as to put his nose in the law books and charged him too expensive bills.

In general, U.S. lawyers are somewhat brighter than elementary school teachers and bureaucrats. They are usually a real step down from the math and science folks.

Amateurs trying to navigate the U.S. legal system place themselves in grave peril. We tend to believe that legal dramas show the reality. Fortunately, CourtTV is putting some reality into the public's mind. Those of us who have taken business law courses know that the law may not mean what you think it does when you read it.

Just passing the bar in the U.S. can be a challenge. But there are a whole host of lawyers who can't make a go of it because they lack the interpersonal skills. I know a very bright guy who wound up working for the state attorney general because he lacked the ability to attract clients.

We do have the small claims court system that handles small, non-criminal matters. Traffic courts also don't usually involve attorneys. Criminal charges are another matter entirely.

Chris Rock has the best advice for poor people in the United States - "Obey the law." Especially for people of color, you can really get screwed for some minor criminal offense.
