I always thought that was the most cowardly, hamfisted way to kill someone. Innocent people could get hurt (I still wonder if the guy in the toll booth got shot). And what if Sonny went with a few other guys with guns, instead of alone? The more direct way is to do it face to face, like Michael did to the Irish cop and the other mobster (Sallozzo?) who tried to kill his dad.

I agree that he was involved, but I'm equally certain a few bullets pierced his toll booth. The shooters weren't very discriminating when they riddled Sonny with gunfire.

The last scene in the movie has 'Arold Shand is being driven off by the IRA to meet his demise. For two minutes not a word is said (as the end theme track is played out) - just a close-up of his reaction from outrage to shock/ fear to anger/ defiance to ultimate acceptance of his fate.
