If we did, perhaps VEF might be in the running for the 2015 Nobel Prize for science!

Fair enough mate, but if we are proved right, then we wont look particularly cool covered in bits of exploded watermelon and the remains of the mircowave!

Sorry Mods, maybe a bit OT, and perhaps this should be moved to the WWII thread )
Well, if I'm going to have to stick to the Facts... oops!
It's an urban (naval) myph-take I've believed since elementary school, after reading Frank Edward's "Stranger Than Science."
http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...r_Than_Science

A "goodread" indeed, still available & popular... but obviously not well fact-checked.
Before posting, tried to verify by Google-ing "Scharnhorst cursed ship" which brings up the quoted article and most of a page of other references, sounding as if they came from the same source. Hey, if it's on the internet, it must be true, right?
If I hadn't been bone-tired (& smashed!) would have responded/apologized last night.

Stay tuned, folks! Will probably post next about Archduke Francis Ferdinand's cursed car, Flight 19, the mysterious disappearance of David Lang, or Captain Seabury's serpent! More urban myphs from the book, undiluted by nit-picky attention to those pesky facts!

Did you know in December 2014 the BBC's A Question of Sport was presented with a Guinness Book of Records(World) certificate for being the longest running sports quiz on television? It has been copied in a number of countries and I remember seeing the German version called Wer Wo Was Intro? on german satellite station DSF. Incidentally ITV became rather jealous in the 80s and tried their own version called Sporting Triangles with captains Ian St John 'Saint'(Liverpool) and Jimmy Greaves(Tottenham and England) 'Greavsie'...it never really caught on.

One of the best episodes of A Question of Sport, and their highest tv-ratings was with the late Emlyn Hughes(Liverpool & England captain) vs captain of England rugby, Bill Beaumont. Hughes failed to recognise his soon-to-be team mate Princess Anne. The picture board showed someone covered in mud and to the mirth of the late David Coleman(presenter) called out "Is it John Read?" - who was a jockey not a show-jumper like Anne. The next episode had the said Princess on Emlyn Hughes team and she threatened to 'handbag' him-only in fun.

Grapes may explode in the microwave, but raisins just smell really bad. Like burnt turds.

A nick name for King Henry VIII, but not in his presence!, was 'old copper nose'.

One of the Royal Mints, I forget which one, used to save silver by mixing extra large amounts of copper with the silver that was to be struck into coins. After a while as the coins got worn during circulation, the nose of the king got worn slightly flat and appeared red! Hence 'Old copper nose'!

They also look like burnt turds.

Coincidence? I don't think so!
