Anyone here ever served in the U.S. Marines or U.S. Army?
I am watching The Boys In Company C.
At the beginning the new recruits are asked to empty their pockets and the contents of their luggage. Just about everything is taken from them: jewelry, diaries, magazines, wallets, cookies from their girlfriends, medicines, valuable documents (I.D.? Driver's License? Social Security Card?) etc etc see screenshot: Do they get that stuff back (except for the perishable items of course) when they leave the service? Does the Corps or the Army stores every recruit's personal items somewhere for the entire duration of that recruit's tour or until he is killed in combat (or in training), whichever comes first? |

I wasn't in the US Army, or the Marines, but I served in the US Navy. On the first day of boot camp, after we recruits had our heads shaved, we went to the supply building and got all the equipment we'd need (uniforms, gear, etc.). We were still wearing our civilian clothes at the time.
Back at our compartment (barracks) we changed into our dungaree uniforms, and packed all our civilian gear (clothing, shoes, watches, reading material (except bibles), etc.) into boxes, to be mailed home. No one had any food, but it would have been disposed of. I'm sure that the characters in the movie did the same thing. |

I served in the British forces, were recruits really not allowed a wristwatch? I know that in the days of National Service(conscription or draft if you prefer) a recruits civilian clothes were taken off them and posted home.
By the way the DI in Boys of Company C is R Lee Hermey who played the DI in Full Metal Jacket and also presents Lock and Load.

Another good Vietnam war film from around the same time was the made for TV A Rumor of War based on the book by Philip Caputo.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0081443/ I can't find it anywhere. It's a shame too because I had the VHS of it back around 1983 and then most likely I taped over it. Blank VHS tapes back then were expensive. |

I wanted to join the USMC when I graduated High School in 1982.
Dad said: "You will go to college and get an education!" Look at me now! 48 years old and I am still working on getting that education: every day looking for Porn! Heck, I could had learned more life skills in the Marines than in real life corporate world. They don't teach you anything in the corporate world except to kiss ass and suck up! |

Im still bemused as to why recruits werent allowed a wristwatch, can someone enlighten me??? We werent allowed to grow a moustache in basic training nor were we allowed to wear any non issued items of clothing such as stable belts or side hats.
