Do YOU still go down the pub?

My 100year country pub burnt down about 5 years ago and they built a tavern at the other end of the street. I don't go there because it has no atmosphere like the old pub.
I go to the RSL club (Returned Servicemens League) and have a beer with the old diggers on Friday night, and have a go at the lottery wheel.

Yeah, Rjg57, we get pubs like that in Pom, you know we do, we gave them to you! But Pill**k asside, we all know what it's like when they come and gut our pub. They turn it into some eatery, managed by a faceless moron who wouldn't know a regular or how to treat him.
And another thing that really bugs me with the government that has done everything for me, I'd just like them to know that I don't smoke, never have and never will. But I could weep when I see old Tony, who fought in WW2 for our right to a free society having to stand outside in the pissing cold to get a fag.
He gave us what we have! The freedom to go to the pub, or not!!!
If it's smokey and we don't like it, we can stay at home. I think that's why we called it a public house in the first place.
And, (honestly) one further gripe, I would much rather go into a city pub and smell the reek of city pub tobacco than the nouveaue pub stink of stale body odour.
Sorry, my gripe for the day guys!!!

You're not the only one Rj, went too Echuca on the weekend for some golf and found my way too the Echuca/Moama RSL, always found the country RSL clubs friendly, the older diggers do appreciate a chat and a beer or 3

The one other thing I like about my local RSL. NO bloody poker machines. Must be one of the few in Oz that doesn't have the damn things.
A founding member of the RSL here is an old Polish ex serviceman who forght alongside the poms during WW2 he just turned 90 and still has his Friday night scotch and water.

Thanks for your comments RC (appreciate) .......... I TOTALLY agree with your comments. I loved going to the pub with my mates to talk football, women, etc.). Unfortunately, I smoke! ...... SO WHAT!

Why, oh bloody why, did'nt this stupid bloody government give US the choice! When I go in a restaurant I DO NOT SMOKE ... when I am on a bus/ship/aircraft/car/work ... I DO NOT SMOKE ... when I am even in my own bloody house I DO NOT SMOKE (all because I respect people's choices and lifestyle).

BUT, if I cannot go down my local without offending everybody in the pub I might as well stop in and go outside (weather permitting!) with my mates and YES ... do what I want with MY life!

Before the 'do-gooders' reply to my thoughts, I'll say this: "CHOICE!" ... Why did'nt they just say ... this is a smoking pub and this one is not! Then, it becomes the individual's choice what they want.

I believe if it continues as it is, there will soon be NO social places where ordinary people (like your mate Tony) can go.

Maybe, I'm old, maybe I'm old-fashioned ... BUT I cannot see myself having a few pints and talking on "FACEBOOK"!

Bring back the 'Smokes and bring back Community Spirit, Community Friendship, etc.

Now THAT'S A GRIPE R.C. !!!!!! (thanks again!)

In Manchester I found a pub which actually looked like a pub. Here in the far north they have all – I mean all – turned into clubs. It's a joke. Only in Canada and New York have I seen anything like an old traditional English pub. Unfortunately my private jet is in for a service so I don't get out much at the moment.

Sorry Ing, but my argument was not to give an individual group a vote or a choice, just to leave us pub goers alone. Everyone of us, smokers, non smokers and, as I have previously mentioned, even infrequently bathers have a hand in 'Pub'. I, like you and most old time regulars, enjoy the craic (crack) at the bar, get into the bullshit and the gripes.
The biggest gripe is when some, usually, inclusive pratt tries to gate crash our comaradie!!!
I do appreciate your comments on my post, Ing, and see this as a positiive, not a negative, we are both on the same track!

I usually go down to the local Casino if I'm in the mood to drink and drink cheaply. Unfortunately however the Craps table has been brutal the past few visits so I'll be sticking with non-alcoholic drinks for awhile.
