Gloomy Sunday
A song so sad, it's downright dangerous and has received Government Health Warnings - or, at least, vocal versions were banned by the BBC during World War 2, as it was feared the song would damage national morale.
Composed in 1933 by pianist Rezső Seress, it soon earned the soubriquet of the "Hungarian Suicide Song". It was frequently rumoured that people took their own lives whilst this song was playing although substantiation is hard to find. Rezső Seress did indeed commit suicide in January 1968, some 35 years after writing the song. He survived jumping out of a window in Budapest, but later in the hospital choked himself to death with a wire. Despite - or, more likely, because of the song's infamy, it has been frequently recorded - usually by women, although there is nothing gender-specific in the lyrics. More recent versions have been by Marianne Faithfull, Sinead O'Connor and Bjőrk. Although, for me, the utter despair has never been captured better than in the 1941 Okeh version by Billie Holiday. http://youtu.be/50E3tL1YMeU Sunday is gloomy my hours are slumberless Dearest the shadows I live with are numberless Little white flowers will never awaken you Not where the black coach of sorrow has taken you Angels have no thought of ever returning you Would they be angry if I thought of joining you? Gloomy Sunday Gloomy is Sunday with shadows I spend it all My heart and I have decided to end it all Soon there'll be candles and prayers that are sad I know Let them not weep let them know that I'm glad to go Death is no dream for in death I'm caressing you With the last breath of my soul I'll be blessing you Gloomy Sunday Dreaming, I was only dreaming I wake and I find you asleep in the deep of my heart dear Darling I hope that my dream never haunted you My heart is telling you how much I wanted you Gloomy Sunday |

I tend to try and avoid listening to 'sad' songs b/c I think I'd always rather be in a better mood, but still some of them creep in.
In this case the song I'm posting doesn't come off SOUNDING sad, but is lyrically moving when you realize it's about losing his father, and I am always struck by how powerful the song is. "Fallen" by Volbeat. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D2Z42rPr_cU |

Alone again naturally Gilbert O'Sullivan
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_P-v1BVQn8
In a little while from now If I’m not feeling any less sour I promise myself to treat myself And visit a nearby tower And climbing to the top will throw myself off In an effort to make it clear to who Ever what it’s like when you’re shattered Left standing in the lurch at a church Where people saying: "My God, that’s tough She's stood him up" No point in us remaining We may as well go home As I did on my own Alone again, naturally To think that only yesterday I was cheerful, bright and gay Looking forward to well wouldn’t do The role I was about to play But as if to knock me down Reality came around And without so much, as a mere touch Cut me into little pieces Leaving me to doubt Talk about God and His mercy Or if He really does exist Why did He desert me in my hour of need I truly am indeed Alone again, naturally It seems to me that there are more hearts broken in the world that can’t be mended Left unattended What do we do? What do we do? Alone again, naturally Now looking back over the years And whatever else that appears I remember I cried when my father died Never wishing to hide the tears And at sixty-five years old My mother, God rest her soul, Couldn’t understand why the only man She had ever loved had been taken Leaving her to start with a heart so badly broken Despite encouragement from me No words were ever spoken And when she passed away I cried and cried all day Alone again, naturally Alone again, naturally

Gary Moore - Still Got The Blues (Live At Hammersmith Odeon 1990 HQ)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lbJI1y0i1mk Redgum - I Was Only 19 (1983) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Urtiyp-G6jY Above song dissected / explained - 2005 hip-hop version by different artist linked https://10protestsongs.wikispaces.co...+Greenlight%29 Ozzy sings "Take Me Out To The Ballgame". (gives new meaning to sad) Not surprisingly soon after The Chicago Cubs recently announced that they have decided to pull the plug on a Wrigley Field tradition: celebrity guests singing “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” during the 7th inning stretch. The reason? Well, I think ostensibly it’s to return to the more old-fashioned ballpark traditions and make the games less about out-of-town celebrities. But if that’s the official reason, the unofficial one is that so very many of the performances in recent years have really, really sucked. I mean, with some of these performances, if they didn’t force you to turn away or cover your ears, then they made you roll your eyes or scratch your head. totalprosports .com /2013/03/05/worst-performances-take-me-out-to-the-ball-game-at-wrigley-field/ Last edited by buttsie; January 15th, 2015 at 07:53 AM.. |

Kim's Caravan written by Courtney Barnett
Watermarks on the ceiling
I can see Jesus and he's frowning at me I see a dead seal on the beach The old man says he's already saved it three times this week Guess it just wants to die I would wanna die too With people putting oil into my air But to be fair, I've done my share Guess everybody's got their different point of view I was walking down Sunset Strip, Phillip Island, not Los Angeles Got me some hot chips and a cold drink Took a sandy seat on the shore There's a paper on the ground, it makes my headache quite profound As I read it out aloud It said "The Great Barrier Reef it ain't so great anymore It's been raped beyond belief, the dredgers treat it like a whore" I drank 'til I was sinking, sank 'til I was thinking That I'm thankful for this view We either think that we're invincible or that we are invisible When realistically we're somewhere in between We all think that we're nobody but everybody is somebody else's somebody Don't ask me what I really mean I am just a reflection Of what you really wanna see So take you want from me So take what you want from me Satellites on the ceiling I can see Jesus and she's smiling at me All I wanna say is... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z-TDyc83g3o |

This is not to be viewed when sad or feeling suicidal, beautiful though and makes you realise things could be worse.
