Ive never seen Lost Highway, but I want to. I think I have seen everything else from Eraserhead on. My take on Mullholand drive is that it is Naomi Watts character's long dream sandwiched in between her fantasies of what she wants Hollywood to be for her and also what she envisions are the reasons behind her failures.

You missed the point because there is no point in most of his movies. Most of his work is full of postmodern nonsense. He is the ultimate postmodern guru among film makers after all and a nice example for how to make a movie about nothing and still being regarded as a genius. He certainly is a very talented director but what he offers the viewer are meaningless, yet beautiful images. I recommend you watch the documentary "David Wants to Fly" by David Sieveking to understand some of Lynch's influences. For me it explained all the nonsense I dislike about his movies. If you ask me, "The Elephant Man" is his most powerful movie to this day because it makes sense and leaves you assured that you've not wasted your time.

David Lynch is undeniably an iconic film maker. You'd think his movies must have been conceived on Class A's, but according to him his inspiration came from his self-medicated 'sugar rushes'.

One film I saw ages ago was Eraserhead, which I found one of the weirdest unnerving films ever, with a pervading a sense of claustrophobia. Always intended to watch that again, to try to make sense of it, but need to be in the right mood, which I never seem to be. Twin Peaks was amazing but just petered out in a maze of incomprehensible weirdness. Other than Elephant Man, Dune, and Blue Velvet (which were kind-of off-centre mainstream, I get that his personal movies tend to be the celluloid version of a 'shaggy dog' story, and most I enjoyed, but after Wild At Heart (with Mulholland Dr. and Lost Highway) I got the sense that he was trying too hard to out-weird himself, and the use of little people etc. just felt cliched. I still have to see The Straight Story for its simplicity.

the thing with his films is that he have philosophical ideas , they have aCertain depth , one can feel it , its not just post modern mambo jambo ( like other "artie " films ) . i know that he is into Transcendental Meditation , so that could give us some idea about his work . have you heard about bruno dumont ? another post modern director , he says that his films doesnt come from the mind rather then a certain feel . i do belive that this might be the case with mr lynch or at least part of it .

How can a film not a have message, even if that message is to have no message- THATs the message. IMO Eraserhead's point was everything man touches, he fucks up.

I like some of his movies (aside from anything in the Twin Peaks realm of course) and then some other of his stuff I find it to be despicable and disgusting and stomach churning (like Blue Velvet and Wild at Heart).

Default I met DJ

I was staying at the Paramount Hotel in NY way back, a hotel the lobby of which was straight out of a Lynch movie, whilst over there working on an Anthrax music video. DL was sitting at the next table to me one morning for breakfast and exchanged a few pleasantries. As it happened, Frank Silva, who played Bob the evil spirit in Twin Peaks was in the video we were shooting, playing an evil spirit.
