Given that the film was directly inspired by a comic book, and had the simplified morality, characterisation, and inaccuracies of one, it kept surprisingly close to the facts compared to most sword-and-sandals films, for instance far closer than "Gladiator" did to the history of Emperors Marcus Aurelius and Commodus. That said, the part played by Artemisia (Eva Green) as adviser and commander under Xerxes was both greatly built up and misrepresented, I guess to add a strong female villain and throw in an opportunity for a bit of shagging. I also got the feeling that the Persians as portrayed in the film were Babylonians or Assyrians, going from their statuary and their oaths to "the Gods" rather than just to Ormuzd/Ahura Mazda. I found "300 - Rise of an Empire" a bit better than the general run of films at the moment, an unpretentious and efficient ancient world action movie that held my attention throughout. My one quibble was that there were constant 3D dust motes or sparks floating in frame in front of the actors in nearly every scene and in 3D their constant movement was a great distraction.

True Detective
I'm currently viewing the American television crime drama series on HBO created and written by Nic Pizzolatto, with the first season directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga, starring Matthew McConaughey & Woody Harrelson.
Pretty good stuff!!! Episode 5 screens tonight on Sky Atlantic but you can catch up on Sky Go. |

Saw that last week. Wasn't impressed. Seemed like a waste of time and characters. How was the extended version? I didn't know there was one. |
