MEGAPORN- Pause/Resume downloads with a Free User account

One benefit MEGAPORN and MEGAUPLOAD offer that most other file hosts don't is allowing resume of dropped/paused downloads if you register for a (free) user account. This is nice for those with slow and unreliable connections. Here's how.

You'll need:

-A download manager that supports pause/resume. Others might work, but I tested with and recommend:

Edit: Feb. 11, 2010- DownThemAll! currently has a bug that interferes with resuming download. In Firefox, use the built-in download manager until DownThemAll! is fixed.

-DownThemAll!. A Firefox extension...which of course means that you'll need:

-Mozilla Firefox. In the unfortunate event that you don't already use this browser, you might consider trying the Portable Apps version on a USB thumb drive for use without installing on your computer. Otherwise test using your choice of standalone download manager.

-An alias. Make it a good one.

-A temporary email address. Easily found with Google.

- A strong password. Keep it in a safe place! See illuminated's post for tips on creating one and a link to an M$ page to check your password strength.

If you haven't already, install DownThemAll! and restart Firefox. Set your download target folder by going to Tools > DownThemAll! Tools >DownThemAll!... if the default isn't to your liking.

This example covers signing up for a MEGAPORN Free User account. Obtaining a MEGAUPLOAD Free User account works the same way.

Go to MEGAPORN's sign-up page. In the lower left corner, click the "terms of service" link and read it (if you want to- ).

Go back to the sign-up page. (see example below)
Press F5 to refresh the Captcha.
Type in your Username, your email address, your strong password (and confirm password), and fill in the Captcha.
Be sure the box next to "I accept the terms of service" is checked.

Make haste! Captcha's don't last long, and neither do some temporary email addresses.

Click the "Register your account" button.


You should get an "account created" welcome screen something like this:


Now open the link you want to download. Be certain that your Username is shown at the top of the page, if not, then Login- you MUST be logged in before starting a download. Type in the Captcha and click "download file".


Click "Regular download"


Select "dTa OneClick!" and then click "OK"

When you want to pause, click the file name to select it if it's not already highlighted in blue, then simply click "Pause".


When you want to resume, or in the case of a connection drop, ensure that you are connected to the Internet, click the file name to select it if it isn't already shaded blue, and click "Resume".


You should be able to log out by clicking the "Sign out" link at the top of any MEGA page. I was able to do this before completing my download, then paused and closed my browser and connection and even rebooted for good measure. Opened my browser back up, connected to the Internet, opened DownThemAll!, and resumed. No Login needed to resume in this way.

CAUTIONS:
----------
-In DownThemAll!, don't click "Cancel" by accident!

-Be sure that you don't remove the file from the DownThemAll! window until it is fully downloaded.

-Don't use DownThemAll! to download a MEGAPORN file while another of their links is paused or you may lose what you have already downloaded.

-If you have free accounts with both MEGAPORN and MEGAUPLOAD, be careful to use the correct one for the link you're downloading and don't pause downloads from both at the same time. I've seen this result in an error, and the paused downloads may be lost.

-I don't recommend using the Mega Manager downloader offered by MEGAPORN/MEGAUPLOAD. I installed it in a Sandbox and it asks to install a search bar that my security softs tell me is trackware. The thing actually still downloaded after being "de-fanged" by my antivirus (it removed the browser plug-ins), but Mega Manager is buggy anyway and currently doesn't seem worth the risk or frustration.

TIPS and TROUBLESHOOTING:
----------------------------
-With Firefox, use NoScript to tame some of MEGA's more annoying traits. Set only to "Allow MEGAPORN/MEGAUPLOAD" or "Temporarily Allow MEGAPORN/MEGAUPLOAD" before logging in to your account.

-If you encounter problems getting a download to start, first see MEGA's FAQ and determine if anything there applies to your situation.

-If you have a dynamic IP, disconnect your (hi-speed) modem, then reconnect. Dial-up users can just re-dial. This should cause your IP address to change, which may help.

-Use CCleaner to delete temp files and cookies from your OS as well as your browser.

-Find your target download folder and delete any partially downloaded files from MEGA. Depending on your download manager, these files may contain data that interferes with starting a new download.
