100% agreee with Jeff Vader and Baron Silas Gr?.....Greenman!
Trying to tie down the English language is a minefield. English shifts up, down, right, left, diagonally on a need-to use basis by every single speaker. That's why English will take over the world. It's all so easy. Which is completely wrong. For f***s sake foreign peeps, protect your heritage.

Well, to be honest ... we all have our own little habits when it comes to speech, and we also have our own pet hates.
If I'm disagreeing with someone, and I'm fairly sure of my facts, I'll often say "I think you'll find ... " which can come across as extremely patronising, but it's unintentional. It's just a figure of speech. I also have a habit of starting sentences with "I mean ... " or "The thing is ... ", both of which are unneccessary, but I still do it! On the flip side, I can't listen to BBC 5Live when Jimmy Armfield is summarising without counting the number of times he uses the phrase "It's what I call ... a poor decision" or "It's what I call ... a bad tackle". Yes, I know you call it a bad tackle Jimmy, because that's what you just called it! These sort of things used to annoy me, but language changes. Things that were once a "spiffing" were then "cool" and now they're "sick"! Anyone looking for sense, logic, consistency or for hard & fast rules, would be better off learning Morse code! |

Then add in the complication that there are different dialects of English for each country, some of which have their own added words and then completely different ways of using English words. If you've ever seen 'Father Ted' then you'll be familiar with the use of 'feck' - a far milder for of the f-word. Then there's unique ways of using words, Grand can mean: Big - a grand house Impressive - generally indicated by elongating the 'a' so it's like graand That's enough - if you were pouring someone a cup of tea 'that's grand' means that's enough, thanks Yes - 'grand so' indicating assent No - you're grand, thanks meaning no, thanks. 1,000 euro - borrowed from cockney rhyming slang I think Makes sense ?

A mere slip of the keyboard and it was late I actually forgot how to spell it-sign of getting older-sheesh!!
Something else that annoys me, seeing as you brought up football and quite apart my eardrums often get blown out by these yelling commentators on radio-specifically Radio 5Live(Alan Green, Mike Ingham & others) is the way they say "just look at that" or "just have a look at what is going on"...well hello, this is RADIO mate, we can't see it, or at least the vast majority of listeners, who aren't at the game listening in on their radios or mobile phones, can't let alone the millions listening on World service. I swear if Alan Green says "Just look at that terrible foul" or "what is the referee doing?" I will scream!!!

Noticed this morning in the local high street that there are Olympic signs up and hard boards printed with the rings and paralympic logos - nearer to me I have been told that there are kite-style banners hung on lamp-posts etc.
Obverse to that there in Poundland loads of England products, wigs, mugs, hats, caps etc so for their sake I hope England get through to the next round otherwise they are going to have an awful lot of stock left over-all for a pand! I am willing to bet that not a day goes by when some idiot asks, "so how much is this then?"

Could I suggest that if you do have a bootmaker, you think about things very carefully before "asking him for cock"! |
