Its interesting to see this back again so I thought I would update it a bit.
Collecting now I feel is a lot easier thanks to these sort of forums. A lot of the pictures I got were from some paysites(now defunct) but a lot now come from scanning material either bought or won on Ebay for instance, a very good source of magazines and reasonably good prices. This forum in particular has such a wealth of scans and pictures as well as video clips that you cannot fail to start to build a collection.
1) Deciding on what you want to collect-as stated earlier on page 1, it all depends on YOU-who do you like and do want to collect everything you can or diversify and go for more than one model-chances are this option is better for you because there are thousands of pictures around not just here but throught the Net as well.

2) What sort of pictures do you want? It never really occured to me to collect covers in whatever state you find them in, but they are a tremendous source of good stuff dotted about this forum and mostly from foreign magazines-the earlier the better and you will also find a lot of naked pics on covers of say page 3 girls but not all.

3) How to keep track of them? Easy, if you have Excel or the like you can make lists and keep a score of how many pictures of each girl you have-and it will add them up for you via a simple formula put in. You can get more names to fit if you print it as landscape OR maybe you prefer portrait instead-either way you can keep a record. I suppose you can do the same via MSWord or the like, but you have to go through the rigmarole of creating your grid first.

4) Where do I keep them all? Simple there are two methods, first you can keep them in folders within a main folder. What I do is make a folder for each girl and when it reaches 1MB in size create a new one. These are saved on the main computer but secondly you can also buy a memory-stick (or flashdrive, removable disk etc) and use that not only as the primary save but also as a secondary backup. With my huge collection I have it on my computer BUT I also have a back up on a memory stick just incase and its backed up every month. Memory sticks range in size but 2MB should be enough to start with UNLESS you keep your pics very large(I usually resize them to fit) but its up to you. Video clips can really eat into your memory so if you collect those as well have a second memory stick of about 16-32GB because that size should be enough to hold alot of video-alternatively spend a bit more on something like an external drive for about £50-60 with up to 400GB.

4) Managing your collection. Whilst this is easy as it grows and you keep a check on things you will find that sometimes you get a picture you might already have-duplicates and it can be a pain searching through loads of folders to track down that elusive double-I suggest getting a Duplicate finder program-you can do this via Google and use that to find things. I have a free one to use and I have already found folders with duplicates. The alternative is to count your collection but when I last did it it took 4 months!

5) What can I do next? Well if you are part of this or other forums my advice to you is SHARE. You will be accepted a lot more if you can show you want to contribute something like scans, pics or video clips-As I said in my original part I was loathe to share my good stuff but once you get past that, you're laughing and posters will respect you a lot more than someone who lurks and does sod all.

I hope that helps you all-I know how difficult it is to start but perservere and its worth it in the end.

Default Back Up Files.

My advice is always make back-up files of your collection and if you can have 2 forms of back-up all the better.

My collection is backed-up on CD-RW's and on USB memory sticks.

I have no problem sharing my collection with other members of this forum.

My advice would be:

Get what you can, where you can as hard copies, and never throw it away. The real magazine will outlive any hard drive (or SSD) ever made, and can always be rescanned. I have found over the years my tastes have changed and what was once 'meh' has since become 'phwoar'. So what I once considered lame became... er, useful.

If you have any single friends who plan to move in with or marry a girlfriend (or vice versa) get their porn before they throw it away. It's a great way to expand your collection. They may have the cheek to ask for it back when they split, but at least you will have had the chance to scan it. Or you could lie and say you threw it away. Before you declare this as harsh think back, how many times have you lent a friend a magazine and never seen it again? Besides, they could always join VEF to see it again! You are an archivist preserving the history of porn for future generations.

As for any electronic only stuff, back up, back up, back up. Depending on the size of your collection, DVDs may be enough, but an external hard drive(s) would be the next step up. Better still get a NAS (network attached storage) box to externally connect to your PC, set it up with 2 identically sized hard drives in a mirrored (not striped) RAID array, and that way if your machine breaks down, your data is safe in the NAS box (which can be left at home) and the guys at the PC shop won't be nudging each other and giving you knowing winks when you go to collect your machine.

I used to collect British Colony stamps. I gave most of them away, but I kept the very best ones. I have them affixed to some plain white paper in a stamp collectors book. I also used to collect foreign coins. I had hundreds of them. They did not have any real value. I just liked seeing all the different sizes and shapes of coins from different countries. Finally I used to collect fossils, and I did this by hunting for them on area beaches and on small rock outcroppings near beaches and parks. I did this for many years and found some really great ones. Most of the fossils I collected near or on beaches were fossils of this prehistoric sea creature called the Trillobite. They were very small, less than an inch long. I had hundreds of these. Once though I found a fantastic fossil of a Pelicopod which is like a prehistoric clam, and I found in a Chicago park many years ago a fossil of a tree leaf. I still have all these fossils.

The one thing I would stress is that you concentrate on a core interest
and you will prosper , for my collection its the 1970's and mid 1980's for penthouse
and mayfair , and Asian babes

today its almost a desert , I really think when I was young , it was a golden age
now - its all fake breasts and shaved pubes - you can keep it

as regards the collection , get the PVC covers for Long Playing Records
they are ideal for large Adult magazines and above all , they do the job
above all , else , protect the collection and be fanatical about expanding it -
remember less is more and quality over quantity ,
it might be heretical but the older stuff is actually a hundred times better
