Yes, I was always happy to grab a Playboy, but not just for the girls, who were far less arousing than Penthouse, Mayfair, Club, Men Only etc. It was just so esoteric and American for a British reader. At the time the zeitgeist of the late seventies and eighties seemed exciting and new. This was partly my age, of course, but even so I remember others as well as me believing that, at the end of that era, punk rock and video nasties really did foreshadow the end of civilization as we'd known it. Even these phenomena seem relatively innocent now. As L P Hartley famously wrote (and I may be paraphrasing slightly): "The past is another country; they do things differently there". Mayfair magazine was an important aspect of my cultural experience. I felt I was being allowed a taste of the adult world just as my father would allow me a glass of sherry or port, moreover I understood particularly from the existence of Mayfair that the experience of being a man and the place one occupied in the world was different to that of being a woman. I was undergoing a rite of passage but as a well-brought-up boy I was both excited and comfortable withing the high-quality confines of its covers.
