I was in the NATO transit mess in Sennelager many years ago when a course of RE young officers was on. They were so badly dressed a pompous Cavalry officer asked them who their tailor was. 'Oxfam' came back a very witty reply.

Another 'pompous cavalry tale'. On Crusader 80, we did a mass drop, shortly after a group of singularly scruffy individuals arrived to scrounge brew, we off course obliged. As we innocently sat an drank our brew (tea)a little scorpion of the Blues and Royals arrived, a youngish lieutenant jumped out and came across ranting and raving and demanding we move. One of the scruffy lot comment that we would do just that, when we had finished our brew. 'That is not a request, it is a bloody order!'

'Correct me if I am wrong, but according to your badging you are a lieutenant, I am a Major, so get back in your noddy tank and fuck off!' Replied the scruffy one, the Major went on to command the SAS, became director of Special Forces and retired from the Army as a Knighted Lieutenant General, I never came across the Lieutenant again!

Our sainted Mums say the same this side of the pond! They live in mortal fear that we will be hit by a car and at either the hospital, or the morgue, will be discovered with skid marks in our undies!
